ISAAC WALTON (1846-1906)- Master Mariner
« on: Sunday 27 December 09 13:05 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find anyone who has information regarding Isaac WALTON. He was born in 1846 in Seacombe, Cheshire. His father was Isaac WALTON (1823-1852) and his mother Martha GRIFFITHS (1817-1900). He served as ship's boy on the Rover (1861) before becoming Master of the sea-going tug Bright Star (1871-1891). He married Mary Cowan McDOWELL in 1865 and had 12 children: Isaac (1865); Francis (1867); Thomas (1869); Ernest (1871); Eveline (1873); William (1875); Harold (1877); Edith (1880); Herbert (1882); Edwin (1884); Ethel (1886) & Alfred (1889). After retiring he ran the Old Fort public House in Bath Street. When he died he was buried in Anfield Cemetery.

I have discovered that the Bright Star was one of the 2 tugs used to bring the Great Eastern back to the breaker's yards at Liverpool in 1888 but cannot confirm that Isaac was master in charge on this voyage. He may not have been since he only had a coastal licence.

Any info about his nautical life and/or his retirement would be appreciated. Or any ideas on where to look next would be useful. I found someone else searching for similar info last year so if you are still out there hkerrysue, please get in touch.

Many thanks for your hard work & reply. Isaac died on 18th January 1906 and was buried on 19th for the sum of £1-12-6! The burial records give his age as 59 and the gravestone as "in his 60th" year so arithmetic puts his birth in the 1846/Jan 1847 range. Based on that, a search of the LDS chuch records finds an Isaac Walton baptised at St. Peter's, Liverpool on 10th August 1846. Parents given as Isaac & Martha which fits with later info in the census returns. Despite the baptism in Liverpool, his birth place is always listed as Seacombe in other documents. I've tried BMD but no joy so it looks like that registration slipped through the net. I hadn't found Mary's birth record yet so many thanks for that snippet. Any other info will be much appreciated.

Mary McDowell b Mar qtr 1843 Liverpool  20 368 on freebmd
the only answer I can come up with regarding Isaac Walton being babtised in Liverpool in 1846 is this..maybe Isaac was born somewhere else and then the family moved to Liverpool when Isaac was a newborn baby...there is in Mar Qtr 1846 Isaac Walton Hunslet (yorkshire) Hunslet  23 366....as he was babtised in August ,the dates correspond..does it say in the later census returns whether Isaac snr or Martha were from Yorkshire ???...........allan
ADDED
 that now seems highly unlikely..
.
Isaac Walton to Martha Evans Sep qtr 1845 Liverpool 20 217 marriage cert ....probably Isaacs parents...

though there is this...Isaac Walton to Martha Atkin in Mar qtr 1846 in Sheffield 22 455..(.although unlikely ,you can`t dismiss it.....)

Hello!

I believe I am Isaac Walton's Great-great granddaughter. Isaac had a son, Edwin, Edwin had a daughter- Mary Burke nee Walton, Mary had a son - James and James had me!

I was just wondering if anyone has anymore information regarding Isaac. My research is in its infancy. I believe Isaac was a Captain...trying to find evidence.

Lovely to come across this thread to confirm what I have already found out. Quite a few years late though...hopefully I will hear form someone.
