Vears - Lutterworth - mid 1800s
« on: Monday 28 December 09 08:27 GMT (UK) »
I am hoping someone may be able to help me.

My g-g-grandfather, Thomas Vears was born in Lutterworth in approx 1825. (Parents - Thomas and Sarah). I have them in the 1841 census living in Ely St.

The next thing I know for certain is that Thomas (Jnr) arrived here in Australia in 1849 aboard the ship, Harbinger. He is listed as unmarried.

I have been told that it is possible Thomas (Jnr) married a Sarah Chamberlain and had a child, John, in 1842. I have found mention of both these events occurring in 1842.. I will apply for the certificates to see if they are "my" people. I believe they may be as, in the 1851 census, John is listed as a grandchild living with Thomas (Snr) and Sarah. The age etc all match up.

I have been looking, unsuccessfully,  to try and find what may have become of John's mother, Sarah Chamberlain/Vears. I also have no idea what became of John as I can't find him in any subsequent census.

I would really appreciate it if anyone is able to help me with this.

Thanks

Thanks everyone for your help.

On the 1851 census, where John is living with his grandparents, his surname is listed as VEARS.

I have found a record on GRO for the birth of a John Vears in Lutterworth in the Sept quarter 1842 (vol. 15 Page 146), then a marriage for Thomas Vears and Sarah Chamberlain - again in Lutterworth - Dec quarter 1842 (Vol 15 Page 243). The couple would have only been about 17 years of age when they married.

Would still be interested to know what happened to Sarah (Chamberlain) and why the young John was living with his elderly grandparents and not his mother in 1851.
The burial records you mentioned are for Thomas' (Jnr) parents. It appears that Thomas may have been an only child as I can't find mention of any other children born to Thomas (Snr)  and Sarah.

I will look into the 1861 census record and the baptism record you mentioned, Mike.

Thanks again.

Greeting’s Again…….Ripley Anne.

You say that you think Thomas was a single child of Thomas & Sarah Vears

If you use the following Ref for the 1851 Census :~

HO107. / 2078. / 215. / Page.5.
With the surname……… VIARS

Then on the image it’s clear as Mary VEARS.

Ashby Magna. Leicestershire.

Mary Vears Aged 29. (1822.)
A House Servant …..born Lutterworth.

So was Mary a daughter of Thomas (Snr) & Sarah Vears ? .

It’s the same with the 1861 Census returns ref No’….. I gave you.
Indexed as Pears but
Again the image clearly states John Vears aged 18.

There are various reasons why Thomas (Jnr) & Sarah are missing from the Census returns for 1851. ......

Away for the Census Night
Staying with friends on the Census night.
Or the Census Enumerator missed the house they were at.

Or via the Internet returns. …… the Surname  miss transcribed.
We already have  two examples of that with Pears & Viars.

Hi again Mike,

Thanks for the information on Mary.. this is definitely a lead for me to chase up.

By 1851 Thomas (Jnr) was in Australia.. having arrived here in 1849. This is why I am so curious about Sarah (Chamberlain/Vears). Perhaps she had died between 1842 and 1849?? Or maybe she married for the sake of the child, John, and then reverted to using the name Chamberlain.. especially after Thomas moved to Australia.

I have also further checked census records and found a Sarah Chamberlain living  in Ely St (the same street that Thomas and his family were living in) in 1841 with parents, Timothy and Jane. Then again in 1851 and with Jane in 1861.

Do you know if there are any on-line records that I can use to chase this up further as, living in Australia, these are all Ireally have to go on.

Thanks.

Hi all, I've only just seen this and not sure it will be looked at.  On the 1841 census, Thomas (aged 15) is listed on Ely Lane with his parents but also, above him on the same census is Mary Chamberlain also aged 15.  Probably John's parents.
Thanks  :)

Marriage;
27 Nov 1842 Lutterworth
Thomas VEARS age 59*, Father JAMES Vears
Sarah CHAMBERLAIN age 59*, Father Thomas CLEWES
Abode Hilly Lane (prob supposed to be Ely Lane)

So did Thomas marry 2 Sarah Chamberlains 1821 and 1842, one a Widow nee Clewes, wow!

F/S has Marriage Banns for a Sarah CLEWES/Charles CHAMBERLAIN 1809
I can find only 1 child to them CHARLES 1811

MARY Chamberlain christened 12 January 1823 Lutterworth, Mother SARAH

So looks like Charles Chamberlain may have died 1838 age 49 so then Thomas/Sarah were free to marry ?
Burial on F/S and on GRO as Chamberlan
