Access to Hereford Times for late 1890s obits?
« on: Thursday 31 December 09 03:39 GMT (UK) »
Hello - I would really like to find out where my 2x Great Grandparents are buried, most likely in or near the city of Hereford.

John Simpson died 23 April 1896 at Burghill Asylum, and
Sarah Ann Simpson (nee Clarke) died  24 August 1898 at Catherine Street in the All Saints district.

Family was living on Catherine St. in 1881 and 1891 censuses.

Would it be too much to ask someone to check the Hereford Times in the week, or two, after these dates to see if there was an obit for either of them?

Many thanks,

Nick

See http://www.burghillchurch.co.uk/e-book2.php?next=1&page=11

"Those who died in the care of the asylum were generally buried in the northern part of the churchyard at the Parish Church..."

Apparently there are well over 2,000 patients buried there in unmarked graves.

Hi guys - thanks for the responses - I'd about given up.

Yes, I have nearly everything to be found on this man from his birth in 1841.  The Hereford Record office advertises a $15 "brief" lookup of asylum records, but passed my request on to someone who billed me almost $100 (US) without providing anything I had not already found.

John does show up in burial records, but no place listed.  When I posted this I had just read that several places had 1890s Hereford newspapers available, and was hoping some kind soul was in an area where they might be able to check obits for the week or so after the dates I provided.

Regards,

Nick

I'm going into Hereford in about ten days time to visit my son ... I could call at the Record Office ?

But if someone is going before I do ... that's fine ... only please post on here so I don't go over the same search again !

Thank you Lydart, for your kind offer - especially since you will be on a social visit.  I don't know if the Records office will have the newspapers, but I suspect local libraries will.  Here is what it says on the Hereford Council site:

"Hereford has a complete file of the two main county newspapers, the Hereford Times and Hereford Journal, starting in 1770.Some years are on microfilm, others in hard copy bound volumes."

Please do not spend too much time on this.

I have censuses, as well as birth and death certificates.

I have no idea if ordinary people (John was a lifer in Royal Marines) normally had published obits as in the US.

You could also asks those who are members of the Hereford Family History Society, if they can look in their journals for information. I remember, back in the 1980s that the Society used to include information from the Hereford Times in their journal.

You could try asking for help at the Hereford Library.  I needed an obituary for my GGGrandfather and I gave Leominster Library his name and date of death and they found the obituary, copied it and sent it to me for a small fee.  As you know his death date any notice or obit would appear within a couple of weeks of that date so it narrows it down, it's not as if you didn't have any idea of when he died.  Would be worth emailing them to find out if they can help.
