Bell-Langford
« on: Sunday 03 January 10 12:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

I am trying to do a family tree with the above surname and not having much luck!

So far I have managed to locate the name back to 1882.  Unfortunately my aim is to try and find out when the two names came together, but keep coming to a dead end.

If anyone has any website suggestions for me I would be most greatful

thank you

Maybe post a little more details on who, where and when you have these families? The more details you give the better chance of folks on here been able to help.

Hi and welcome to rootschat
www.freebmd.org.uk is a very useful site for post 1837 marriages.  There are far too many Bell to Langford marriages for me to take a guess but as you know the area you are looking it might help.  Pre 1837 marriages may be on the IGI on www.familysearch.org   It is not full coverage but might be a start.
As Migky says if you give more details then it will be easier for us to help.  Census references perhaps?
Regards
Andrea

Welcome to Rootschat

Use this website

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
DON"T ENTER FIRST NAMES ENTERED
1) Put in Bell- langford in the surname (No first name)list and click on birth and 1882 will come up as the  first birth.

2) Next as fresh start put in Bell in the first surname Box
and Langford in the Spouses name (3rd box down)
and do a visa versa in boxes
Click search marriages

Then buy the marriage certificate you think is the parents of the 1882 birth from the fathers name on the 1882 birth certificate and go from there.
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

PS

Contact Pontypridd Register office to see if they have a Bell-lanford Marriage pre 1882 as not all marriages are transcribed  in free BMD's

Hi dobfarm,

that was good- I had tried to find any with no success in censuses. The family are listed as Bell in 1891 and 1901 (although on 1891 the children have the name Francis which is a mistake- has been dittoed from William Francis) parents are William and Ellen b Somerset.

I think we need more info from Jay re the family he/she is interested in - there are lots of Langfords in Somerset and Glamorgan but you have given BMD site details to help. :)

Hi everyone thank you so much for your replies.

Basically my father has asked me to look into the history of our family surname, as now my sister and I are married the name will go no further :( so I am trying to work my way back.

Unfortunately my father does not know anything about his family history as his father died back in the 70's.  All the information I have is the name of his father and grandfather, and the fact that they lived in Wales.....not a lot for me to go on!!!

I know his dad was called William Charles Bell-Langford (married Nellie Chapron), his grandfather was also called William but his great grandfather was called Arthur.

From this information alone I have to try and build a family tree!!!

I shall not give up though until i have exhausted all avenues.

thank you again for all your help

Do you have any idea when the William who died in the 70s was born?    Looking at his death entry might give his age so you could then look for the family in the 1911 census.  We cannot do looks up for that one on rootchat but there is a lot to glean from the index and then you can pay to view the image.
1911 census tips http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,355239.0.html
Earlier census records are more easily searched on various paying sites.  the 1881 is free on www.familysearch.org
William and Nellie married in Pontypridd in 1932.  Getting that certificate would give you their ages and the names of both fathers.
