I'm not sure, no indication of that so far. Always seemed to be boarding house keeper/hotelier, a bit of a gentleman by all accounts, spoke many languages.
Doesn't sound the type to get his hands dirty

I found this wedsite on google about Croatians in Australia it is infact a book you can purchase it states Thomas Pavletich (Tomislav Pavletic) arrived in Victoria in 1853

Most of the info was supplied to the author by a cousin in NZ so it is only as good as my 10 yr old research at the time that I had given the cousin.

I'm not sure where the author got 1853 from.
