Cando, you're a treasure.  Great lateral thinking!

The Rachael, Frances and Thomas CRAIKE entries look watertight, thanks.  I've already put them in our tree.

Within another St Saviour Batch, C055182, there is an entry:

     CRAKE Thomas Samuel b 16 Nov 1800, c 9 Feb 1806, f Thomas, m Lucy

But your Sprouston idea scotches (ahem) that proposition.

I've also searched Batches C055182, M055182 and M055183 (Soundex on) for Craike, Margaret and Lucy at the relevant times, but without luck.

I think the Charles birth record back in Surrey is the clincher, so into our tree they'll go!  (Though if anyone has a better idea, please let us know.)

And perhaps such wander-lust reinforces your New Zealand notion.  Was Tom a shearer, perhaps?

My uncle, middle name Craike, is certain he has some Scottish blood in his veins.  Perhaps he'll have to content himself with the notion that Thomas cut a sheep, whilst shearing, during his working holiday at Sprouston!

Thanks again, cando, terrific work!

Hey Cando

I just read your newspaper clip about the passengers on the Eureka going short of tucker.

The Otago region is down south on the south island; plenty of sheep there.

Quite apart from the possible Ballaarat Eureka link, it's more interesting stuff to go into our tree.

More thanks.

I think that Helen/Hellen and Charles birth info at St Saviours [right area] should be considered.  I would be purchasing one of their certs from GRO.

You can search on
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
for William D's birth.  May give you more information on the parents Thomas and Margaret.

Cheers

Thanks again Cando.

With two servants, Tom's dad was clearly not a shearer!

Look's like son Tom had left home, perhaps to emigrate to New Zealand, before 1861.

With a bit of luck we can find young Tom's grandfather was of Scottish stock, after all.

PS

I've got to get back to work now.  I'll review your recent valuable contributions tonight.
