I also have no connection to the family, just an interest in old Gravestones.

A possible for Robert Sen. also in Nigg Churchyard

1893. Erected by James Allan in memory of his Grandfather and Grandmother Robert Allan and Ann Mann.

Hello Bruce.

Have just come across your enquiry about Alexander Allan.  He was the brother of my Grandfather William.  This makes us second cousins!  William migrated to Wellington - there was very little to keep young people in the Scottish Highlands at this time.  I believe I can trace back the Allan line to a John Allan who married Elizabeth Murdoch at Barony on 24 October 1686 - his father was also John.  There are some interesting descendants from this couple.  I can go into more detail if you are interested.  Not sure how much further you have got with your own family researches.

Regards,
Jonathan

While I am not related to this Allan Family, or don't think I am (looking for Allan family, Stirling, Bridge of Allan area).
I have the following information that might interest members of this family
Extract from the New Zealand Cyclopedia.
"Mr. ALEXANDER ALLAN. Driver in charge at Cross Creek, was born in Nigg, Rosshire, Scotland, in 1848.
Leaving school at 14 years of age, Mr. Allan went to learn engineering with Messrs. Faulkner Bros. of Inverness, and after serving two years he returned to his native town, where for five years he was engaged in the engineering business on his own account. After a short time in North  America, Mr, Allan went to London, where he worked for a year with Messrs. Currie Bros., the well known steamship owners, and for two years was millwright in Woolwich Arsenal.
Landing in Wellington on 1st of January 1880, he got employment in the Phoenix Foundry, and a year later received an appointment in the New Zealand Government railway Department as a fitter in charge, and was subsequently promoted to the position he now holds. Mr. allan is well qualified for the responsible office he fill.
Sober, cautious, and capable he exercises a vigilant supervision over all entrusted to his care.
He is married, and has 5 children."

The reason I have this information is that I also lived in Cross Creek.
