It looks from the Portland record that he signed on there as the from Station is the same as the location. Unfortunately was was transferred to Old head less than a year before the 1841 census - which might have been able to give you some clues.
....The only info i have on Dominick Doherty is that he was a coastguard and lived in Bunbeg Co Donegal . His wifes name was Charlotte Dyer their son George born Donegal abt 1843 ..
Although the Bunbeg/Donegal facts seem to work, It looks like Dominick was posted in Co. Mayo between 1840 and 1846 .. so not sure how the birth of George fits in...
