Great Uncle Sid - obscured message - COMPLETED
« on: Monday 11 January 10 00:16 GMT (UK) »
Hello again,

This is my Mam's Uncle Sid who was quite a character. He was born in 1890 and was an engineer in the Royal Navy, eventually becoming Chief Petty Officer. He was still working as an engineer at 80 years of age and cycled to work.

Personally, I have always liked this picture as it is. It has that certain charm to it but a restoration might change my mind, if anyone fancies having a go.

Something is written on it near his left hand, but I can't quite make it out. And does anyone happen to know what the letters after his name stands for?

I'll follow this up with a cropped piece with the writing.

Here's the cropped bit.

I should have said that when he cycled to work he had left the navy ;D ;D ;D

Hi Colin.

Although I'm unable to make out the lettering on the front of the photo, I think the initials after his signature -' E.R.A.' will stand for Engine Room Artificer - a Senior NCO Rank in the Engine Room Branch.

Hi Colin  :)

I suspect it is the name and location of the photographer - can't read it, though.
Cheers
