Re: Haverfordwest 19th century jobs

Hi,
During the 1800's a number of my male relatives worked as 'masons' or 'stone masons' ....any idea what these jobs would have entailed, or where these people might have worked. They all lived in the St.marys ansd St.Martins areas in Haverfordwest
The period you talk of was a boom time in ideas and house building. Masons did the stone relief and decoration on window & door surrounds. There was a vogue taken from Europe for large carved figures to decorate Gardens drive ways etc they would have been employed on this type of work. Public Building and privately funded public buildings , town halls, public baths, stock exchanges warehouses etc etc where all being built in the gothic style which I believe was now taking on a revival, they would have been employed to produce the gargoles delicate decorations inside and out of these building, this was of course at a time of cheap expert labour, by the 1st war man power was at a premium costs soared and the expert work of masons declined. Also there was a growing return to the simple ways "Arts & Craft Movement"  when "organic" became the watch word.
Ofcourse they could always fall back on the production of headstones & memorials. I believe Stone Masons could be a very transient job, taking them to wherever the work was.

Free BMD suggests possibly 2nd Qtr of 1870 in the H'west registration District aged 45 yrs, although there are 2 others before ages are shown after 1866.
I will check out St Martins burials for you on a visit to the Record Office.
