Quick question about the girl's name "Menai".
« on: Thursday 14 January 10 11:50 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone advise whether there are any variations on this name or whether (unlikely, I imagine) it has an English equivalent?

Thank you
Bronwen

This is from the Menai Strait between Anglesey and the mainland. I don't think there are actual variants - the only name I know of which is similar is the quite popular Welsh name Menna.
Ambrose; Llandilofawr, Pennsylvania.
Grindley; Llandilofawr, Ohio, Louisiana, Washington DC.
Rees(e); Pennsylvania.
Lewis, Llandilofawr.

Hi Bev

Thanks for your quick reply.

I have a picture of 3 little girls, one of whom is a Menai (believed daughters of the lady you helped me with recently.) Whilst I wait for the marriage cert to arrive, I have been playing around looking for poss births for the 'supposed' daughters. Have found poss births for the other 2, Menai eludes me atm.

Of course this could always be a middle name, by which she was known or she might not be a sister, but a cousin or friend and therefore different surname!!

I didn't think there would be any variants and Menna has crossed my mind. Thanks for your input (again!!)

Thanks, Bethan!

Whilst I have found probable  births for 2 of the sisters in the area the family lived in South Wales, I have also found a birth for a Menai in Caernarvonshire that fits in exactly datewise with and matching parents names. I'm wondering now if they were in Caenarvonshire visiting family when the baby was born and maybe tha's why she was given this name.

Of course the only way to find out for sure will be to hit the plastic £££££££ (again!). :(

Hello.
My Grandmothers name was Menai, the family came from North Wales but then moved down to South Wales, she had two sisters and brothers I think. The surname was Parry.

Best wishes
