The famine (1845-1850) accelerated the numbers going, but that continued in the years and decades after the famine... and has rarely stopped since (indeed with the criminals we've had running the country over here of late, it's only starting again).

Them leaving in the 1850's is certainly not unusual and that's when many of my own family left...
