looks like john was in the signals,,,apart from the writing,you can see the crossed flags on his arm...

"Crossed flags" have been used by the Signal Corps since 1868, when they were prescribed for wear on the uniform coat by enlisted men of the Signal Corps.

i have looked on the NA medal card index for a j w garbutt,,,there are a few possibilities,,but none in the signals.

The information on the photograph was written on by my uncle in Australia.  I don't know where he got the information from.  I must say I was suprised that a miner would go to war.

i dont think he would  have been Royal Signals but a signaller within an Infantry Battalion.Its a shame the cap badge isnt better.
Was going to suggest Northumberland Fusiliers?
