Preston Quarter Cemetery Whitehaven
« on: Monday 18 January 10 16:40 GMT (UK) »
I have today received a burial record for my gt gt gt grandmother who died in
1906 Bardy Lane Whitehaven. Her name was Mary Doran, a widow of 71yrs.
The information I received from Whitehaven RO states that  she was buried
Ward 6, Section 0, grave no.475
I would love to know if a gravestone is present marking the spot, with a possible
engraving,........ does anyone know how I can go about finding out ? I would
dearly love to know as she is my direct ancester.
Any help gratefully appreciated.
Kind regards
Alyson

Hi Alyson,

Geoff directed me to your request (Thanks Geoff).  I will try and see if there is a headstone there, though I haven't been there since before Christmas.  It might be a few days (depending on weather) but I'll let you know by the weekend.

Regards

Alyson,

I did go to the cemetery this am - the workman that was there thinks it is a "common grave", which is unlikely to have a headstone.  "6/O" is quite a large area to cover so I'm afraid I left it for today as he was unable to give me a more precise location.  I have kept the details and I'll try again next time I'm there.

Do you know when her husband died? - if it was later he may have a headstone.

Regards

Joan

Thankyou Joan,
Unfortunately Mary's husband died sometime before Mary in 1872 ......... just a bit of wishful thinking on my part that he might have been there!!
Thankyou once again for your efforts. :-X

Hi Alyson,
I'm not sure if you're still following your family history but I came across your thread when looking for info re preston quarter cemetery in Whitehaven and noticed the name Lee on your list and also that your Gt GM was born in Bardy Lane.  I have an Elizabeth LEE who was the second wife to my gt gt gf  who was also born in Bardy Lane (No 17) and other family members lived in Back Row. Just wondering if Elizabeth LEE is any relation to your Lee family member?
Kind regards,
Angela.

Good day alyson123,

I've recently seen this post you began asking for information about Whitehaven and Preston Quarter Cemetery and Bardy Lane. Attached is a plan of that cemetery with Ward 6 Section O highlighted in red border.
That part of the cemetery was generally for Roman Catholics so presumably your 3x Gt Grandmother Mary Doran was RC? There is no headstone for that grave which is in the middle of a large grassed area as a lot of that section was for common graves.

Hope this helps. If you want a photograph of the approximate location of that grave I can pop along some time and take one.

Hi Jos,
Love the cemetery plan! Could you repost please without the red markup? My interest is John Devlin, born c. 1812, died Oct 1860. Have just learnt that he was buried on 04 Nov 1860 at ward 3, section B, no. 49.

This is from the Whitehaven Cemetery burial register (Nov 1855-Mar1888) which, rather wonderfully, is available free online at Cumbria Archive Service:
https://www.cumbria.gov.uk/archives/online_catalogues/genindexes/indexes.asp

Your plan is just what I was looking for :)

PS burial register says he died age 58, but pretty sure this was 48 (going by 1841 & 1851 census).
