William Branwhite (1810/1811-184?)
« on: Wednesday 20 January 10 03:16 GMT (UK) »

Wasn't sure where to put this as where he died is uncertain.

Would some kind soul, somehow, be able to look up which William Branwhite I need? I am going to order his death cert but as there are two William Branwhites recorded as dying between 1841 and 1851 and I don't want to shell out for the wrong one :(

William Branwhite (born 1810 or 1811) was recorded on the 1841 Census with his wife Elizabeth and three children. A fourth, Mary Ann, was born in 1842, but William had died by 1851.

I have searched FreeBMD, which has thrown up two by this name. The first died/was registered in Colchester in 1841 and my Aunt and I believe this may be the one we're after since it's closest to where the family was known to be living (in the Sudbury/Long Melford area) at the time of the 1841 Census.

However, there is another whose death is registered in 1845 in St George Hanover Square, which seems quite far from home for a miller to be, but it's this death that fits with the mystery Thomas Branwhite on the 1851 Census, whose age is given as five years (so a birth of about 1846 - closest I've found is 1844), whose mother is given as the widowed Elizabeth, who lived with her mother-in-law Sarah Branwhite, the head of the house.

All a bit odd really, but I'm hoping William death cert clears things up, provided I get the right one ;D

Many thanks  :)

This looks likely to be yours:

Long Melford
William Branwhite buried 29 Oct 1845 aged 34 years.

Wouldn't be the first time someone was taken back to home parish for burial.

The 1841 death is the William Branwhite born 1799 in Witham, Essex, as that family moved into Colchester.

Seems like the 1845 one was him then, which means he'd be Thomas' father. Thank you  :)

Not quite sure what would have possessed him to go to London, but on checking my notes, he may have had close relatives there. Something else for me to gnaw on :D

Also, smudwhisk - through a wayback archive I've gotten hold of the Cosford Database. I've copied down all the Branwhites, for all the inaccuracies, and if you wish, I'll get the Westrops too  :)

Hi JacobeaM

Thanks for the offer on the Cosford Database archive but as I have got access to the original parish registers on microfiche, its not really needed.  I can always check anything I want to see on archive.org anyway. :)

I have a mourning brooch which I am selling on Ebay, but the inscription is for Sophia Branwhite,  died 25 September 1808 aged 32. I note that there are later Sophia Branwhites, so I assume this is a family first name.

Apologies for the late reply Tegna!

That certainly is a most lovely brooch ;D Although having looked, I'm still not sure which Sophia it belongs to, but she definately not in my direct line. However, she certainly was a cousin of one of my Branwhite ancestors.

Thanks for linking it :)

Hi, The above born 1810 Long Melford I have him dying 1845 too which does fit with his wife Elizabeth on the 1851 census.  I think it does look like he is the father of Mary Ann and Thomas and his mother was Sarah.
He was my 3rd Great grandfather.  I am studying the Brandwhites at the moment so too am grateful for any information
