John Tyler and his family , where did they go?
« on: Wednesday 20 January 10 05:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I was hoping someone might be able to help me find the family of John and Ann (or Harriet) Tyler. I have found them in Deptford in the 1841 census living in Giffin Street, but I can't find any trace of them after the birth of their last child in 1848. I am also hoping to find a marriage record for John and Ann or Harriett (I am guessing her name is Ann Harriett or Harriett Ann) Can anyone help me?

Name   Age/Sex   Profession   Born in county
John Tyler   m/45   Chimney sweep   no
Ann Tyler   f/26      yes
Ann Tyler   f/3      yes
Henry Tyler   15 months      yes
Thomas Tyler   14   Apprentice sweep   yes
Henry Tyler   11   Apprentice sweep   yes

I beleive that Thomas and Henry are nephews so may not be with the family at later dates.

Records at St Pauls in Deptford show the Christenings of:
Henry James, son of John and Harriett, Giffin St, c 16 Feb 1840
William Thomas, son of John and Ann, Giffin St, b 27 Aug 1841, c 10 Oct 1841
John Edward, son of John and Harriet, Church St, c 23 Jul 1843
Caroline, dau of John and Harriet, Church St, b 21 Jan 1846, c 15 Feb 1846
Thomas Edward, son of John and Ann, Church Street, b 27 Dec 1847, c 6 Mar 1848

Any help anyone could give me on this would be really appreciated

Fran

There are two John TYLERs that I can see, both St Dunstan & All Saints.

1836 Sept 4, 11 & 18, Banns read for John Tyler, bach & Ann Garrett, spin, both of this parish. They married on 31 Oct 1836.

1836 Sep 18, 25, Oct 2, Banns read for John Tyler, widower & Harriet Pain, spin, both of this parish. They married on 3 Oct 1836.

One of them in 1861
Collier St, St Nicholas, Deptford
J TYLER, head mar 63, Chimney sweep, born Greenwich, Kent
Ann TYLER, wife mar 38, born Deptford, Kent
John TYLER, son unm 15, Sweep, born ditto
Caroline TYLER, dau 13, born ditto, Blind from birth

Hi Ian,

Thank you so much, I can't understand why I couldn't see them! doh! I wonder which he married, Ann or Harriett. Given his age I'd guess it was Harriett Pain, given the differences in their ages it is likely he was a widower not a bachelor. Thank you so much, off to the library again tomorrow to look further  :)

Hi, I am also researching John Tyler Chimney Sweep bn 1793.I can see these posts are quite old but the Information posted has been very useful and interesting.

I have also found John Tyler in the 1841 census and 1871, nothing in between.

Hi Lyndsey

I haven't had much time to look into John and his family recently. His brother Thomas was my not sure how many greats grandfather. His son John Tyler immigrated to New Zealand in 1872 or so (and changed his name to Whiteman). There is a family rumour that two of the Tyler families immigrated around the same time but one of the ships sank and the other family was killed. I haven't had a chance to probe that any further, but maybe that's what happened to the older John?
If you want to message me I would be happy to share what I have with you.

Hi Fran
Many thanks for your message.  What sad news though.... I wonder why he changed his name Whiteman ?  It will take time to go through all this new information, but just had to write and say thank you. My great great etc Grandfather was Henry George bn 1831 and he must be one of the 'cousins' maybe in the 1841 census. I know his father was called John Tyler because I have legal documents relating to the Chimney Sweep business. So I am a bit confused with the 1841 census if he was staying with his Uncle John ! Anyway Henry George then moved to Bayswater and carried on the Chimney Sweep business from there. Apparently in the 1800's and 1900's there were hoards of Tylers in the Paddington and Kensington area. The same names appear again and again in the census, it has been quite challenging. Anyway the older John Tyler bn 1793 I believe he died in 1874 was at Greenwich Workhouse in 1871 . So my work continues, anymore information you have would really help. I will let you know if I discover anything I think will  interest you . Thanks again Lyndsey
