Thomas Oldham - where is he?
« on: Thursday 21 January 10 08:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I hope you can help me.

David Oldham emigrated to Australia from Llanelly Wales.

On his death certificate his fathers name is Thomas and his mother is Mary

I can find Mary in the census with his siblings living with a John Bowen, but I want to know what happened to Thomas.

The family story is that Thomas came from Oldham, but I'm not sure if he did. (or maybe his family did)

So Im looking for a marriage between a Mary and Thomas Oldham and his death or if I'm really lucky his birth.

Mary was born about 1806 and David was born 1834

I hope you can help, cheers Ted

Are you looking at this 1851 census.
Mary Bowen 40 widow
William Oldham 18 mason.
David Oldham 17
Ay Oldham 14 ( could be Anthony)
James Bowen 9
Richard Bowen 7
Henry Bowen 5
Morgan Thomas 35

This seems to be the same people in 1841.
Llanedy, Llanelly
John Bowen 50 mason N
Mary Bowen  35 Y
John Ouldham 11 Y
Thomas Ouldham 10 Y
William Ouldham 7 Y
David Ouldham 5 Y
Anthony Ouldham 4 Y

Marriages Jun 1841      Llanelly
BOWEN  John /OLDHAM  Mary

Can`t find a death record for Thomas, perhaps he died prior to Sep 1837.

there's a parish record of a marriage of Thomas Oldhum & Mary David 1/5/1829 in Llanelli parish church. You can get a copy of the entry from the record office in Carmarthen. Names of witnesses may help to trace them.

That marriage is on IGI.
Using the Batch No for the record, there are only 2 Oldhams in that Batch.
269. THOS. OLDHAM - International Genealogical Index
Spouse  SUSANNA WILLIAM
Gender: Male Marriage: 03 DEC 1805 Llanelly, Carmarthen, Wales

 270. THOMAS OLDHAM - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Marriage: 01 MAY 1829 Llanelly, Carmarthen, Wales

There are over 90 DAVID marriages.

Thank you so much for you help Wilcoxon, I will figure out where this fits when I get a chance.

I love your avatar - Barry Sheene was such a wonderful person. I met him once at Phillip Island and he signed my friends little girls t-shirt for her and gave her a piggy back ride.

I am still hoping someone can find Thomas Oldhams date of death so I can figure out whether Mary was a bigamist or not.

Thanks again Wilcoxon you've done a marvelous job

Cheers Ted

well, more records have come online since you last posted, but I can't see a death reg or burial for Thomas.

FreeReg has transcriptions of parish records up to 1837 for St Elli and there's a baptism for John Oldham, son of Thomas & Mary, bp 16/5/1830.

http://www.freereg.org.uk/

The family were in Llanedi in 1841 and the burial records for that parish haven't been transcribed as yet.

Mary's remarriage ref is
Mary Oldham june qtr 1841 Llanelly vol 26 pg 892 with John Bowen on the same page

I've checked the death regs for Llanelly district from sept qtr 1837 to 1841 and I think this could be Thomas's death reg
Thomas Older june qtr 1838 Llanelly vol 26 pg 439

It's the only occurrence of that surname in the district between 1837 & 1974 and the GRO index can contain errors because of using copies of copies of quarterly returns.
