According to the England & Wales Criminal Registers 1791-1892 (which are available on Ancestry - but for which I can only see the Index), a John McIvor was tried for something in West Yorkshire on 21 August 1865 and the sentence was Imprisonment.

It could be a completely different person ... but yours was, apparently, in Sheffield in 1873.

I think you need to see the marriage certificate first to ascertain his father's name. Then, if he still cannot be found on the censuses with that additional information, you could order the birth certificate but make it conditional upon the father having the same name as is on the marriage certificate,

I agree with Posteria that you must get his marriage certificate to find out his father's name.
However, I think this family could be a good possibility. Look at how the name has changed over the years ;D

Ordered marriage cert so will be able to do more when that arrives.

I had come across Bernard McIvor but I dont think he is related as he is from Ireland but I could be wrong will see when cert arrives, mind you he does have sons called Arthur and Henry and these have been used mainly as middle names in our family and so far not come across them anywhere else.  We have always been told that John McIvor (now thinking his dad) originally came from Harris/Lewis only thing is there are rather a lot of them so need to get parent names to narrow it down.

The arrest record sounds interesting too, I had heard he was very fond of a drink, so you never know, again will look further when marriage cert arrives.

Hopefully you will let us know what the marriage certificate says.

Why should Bernard McIvor not be related because he comes from Ireland?

In the first quarter of 1844 there is a birth registration at South Shields for a John McEvar. The GRO registration is 24 201.

Just to add that a search of the South Tyneside Registrars site shows that this John was born in Westoe District of South Shields.

Should you need it for future reference: Bernard McIvor's wife was named Mary McClaren.

Good luck,

Got the marriage certificate through today at long last.  Bernard is listed as John's father.  Just need to now track his brothers/sisters, etc.

Thanks for your help.

So it looks like the family I listed in post 10 was the right one?
