how and where do i find a birth ?

hello, can anyone tell me how and where can i find a birth, as the bmd does not start untill 1837, the person i need to find was born 1811 i only know its london.,:)
reserching ,surnames shingleston, hawkins, jordan, hudson ,pout, blackman wetherly, epps, baker, port, porter, rowden.goodwin, whitehead colley church.dorgan, in kent

Can we have a name Whitstable, there are some records on Ancestry which might help. You could also try Family search . org.

ancestry have baptism parish records of london you can search
that will give you parents names
PUTTNAM..london..olney..

hello i have tryed ancestry but i dont know what i have to look for and where i have only searched 1881 census for people i need to find this person so i can get his birth cert:)

We can't help without a name :)

NB If it was before 1837 there won't be a birth certificate, as civil registration only began then (1 July 1837).  Before that the best you will get will be a baptism certificate.  Do you know the relevant person's religion?

On Ancestry homepage, you will see featured records, some baptisms are there up to 1812 and 1813 onwards, I think the newer records have been transcribed but older one you will have to search church by church.

hi sorry i took long getting back to you i got lost on where i posted i was browsing ancestry, arr so it will be a baptism cert that i will have to get , as for religion i can not be sure but there may be of irish origon but i will not know untill i seach back a bit further i may be wrong , the only details i have is name john dorgan born in deptford 1811 the only other details i have is when he died and married and who his children were , i can not find him as i dont know where deptford comes under i presume london, area but thats all i  have :)

Is this his marriage?  (I see from the 1861 census that he was married to a Frances).

If this is right, the marriage certificate ought to tell you the name and occupation of his father.

hi thankyou yes that is right, so if i get the marriedge cert of john and frances it will state both the fathers on it,  and if i want to go back a little further just to see if johns father was irish how wouled i do that:)liz
