Common in Berkshire
« on: Monday 25 January 10 10:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I need to look up a baptism for a Richard Williams, but all I have of the birth details from census returns, is that he was born 1831-36 at Common, Berks.  There are so many commons in Berkshire, and his family stopped at many of them.

Does anyone know of a place which was known simply as "Common"?

Thanks

Monique

hi, mamor  it wont help much but.i have some of my people down as born 1819  parsons lane, clithero lancs i looked up old maps and found it was a field were they stayed.so it was put down as abode there was others down there too, it may be that yours was just common land, that you could stay on and it was put as place of birth. try to find maps of your search area, and see if there is anything called just the common.good luck, rob g

Thanks for your replies, I know the family stayed on many commons (Woodhay Common, Sonning Common, Bucklebury Common etc).  I think I will have to try and find an old map as suggested.

It could be Compton, I will certainly put it on my list of places to search.

Best Wishes

Monique

Thank you, I have tried Newbury (found someone else who I wasn't expecting to find)! but I haven't tried Maidenhead yet, I will add it to the list of places to check.  The main problem with this travelling family is they were often baptised in a different place to where they were actually born!
