Hugh Simpson - 1901 Look Up Request
« on: Monday 25 January 10 20:51 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for the census return for 1901 that has a Hugh Greenwell Simpson (Hugh Simpson) in it, and further information about his parents and possible siblings.

Hugh Greenwell Simpson on BMD states he was born the June quarter of 1899 in Auckland district.  Volume 10a Page 270.

If we can find his father, then perhaps a further way back we could also find Hugh's grandparents and possibly great grandparents.  Perhaps the name Greenwell could also be a family surname.

With regards and future thanks.

1891
30 High Row, Crook

Thomas 35 coal miner bn Crook
Ann 30 bn Seahall harbour
William E 6 bn Crook
Matthew A 5 bn Crook
Jane E 3 bn Howden le Wear
Thomas G 9mths bn Crook

Cant see him conclusively in 1881, there are some coal miners called thomas Simpson of right age around, but none specifically with birthplace Crook.
You may need to get Hugh's birth cert, to get a maiden name for Ann, to lead us to the right marriage, in order to find Thomas's father.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London

Hi,  maybe the images I found are a bit clearer so am adding my findings to what Liz found earlier

1891 census, Ann's birthplace is Seaham Harbour, address is 30 High Row, Roddymoor, Crook

1901 census, Thomas' birthplace is Bedburn, (abt 5 miles from Crook) and Ann's is Murton Coll (Murton Colliery), children's 2nd names are abbreviated so hard to make out but have checked them against birth registrations on freebmd:
William Ernest and Mark Anthony, both born Sunniside Crook, Jane Ellen b. Howden le Wear, Thomas George b. Roddymoor Crook, Esther Isabella b. Witton le Wear, Alfred Ralph & John Robert Watson, and Hugh Greenwell, all 3 born Crook

I think the name Mark must be a mistake on the 1901, the 1911 index shows Matthew A. as in 1891, and if you check freebmd for the births there doesn't seem to be one for a Mark

It might be worth looking at the full 1911 image to see what birthplace is given for Thomas.  In the index the children's names are as above. There is also a Richard Hunter Simpson. You need to buy credits to see the household list or the full image.

Because of Richard's middle name, there's a possibility that Thomas Simpson married Ann Hunter  Sep 1884  Auckland    10a   263  - but as Liz says, you may need to get Hugh's birth cert to be sure, as there are a few Thomas Simpson/Ann marriages around that time and area

Kind regards
Barbara

Just to add that in 1881 there is a Simpson family with son Thomas born North Bedburn which looks a good possibility, at RG11 Piece 4926 Folio 101  Page 18
living in North Bedburn, father Mark mother Mary, siblings Esther, John Robert, Alice and Mark
1881 census is free to view on ancestry, findmypast or familysearch

again, to be certain, you will need Hugh's birth cert, then Thomas & Ann's marriage cert

Thank you Barbara, for all this.

I've recently become in contact with one of Hugh's granddaughters and at present I am unsure if she knows anything concerning his family, but I shall ask her first.  She maybe able to give a little bit more light to this, if all else though I will at some point order Hugh's birth certificate.

Thanks so much for everyones help.  Much appreciated.  :-)

Hi, I’m Hugh’s Great Grandaughter, from Hugh’s child Robert Scurr... I have found quite a lot of the Simpson family tree over the last year and a half.  I’m just wondering if we are related? I understand you posted this enquiry quite a while ago now so I’m unsure if you will get this message but it would be nice to know of your interest and if we are linked somehow.
I look forward to hearing from you.  Regards, Bex
