Dundee dock building SORTED
« on: Monday 25 January 10 21:45 GMT (UK) »
What a fantastic building...looks more like a wedding cake :D It's at the entrance to the Earl Grey Dock.

http://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/photodb/wc4300.htm

Does anybody know the name of the building? Besides "Earl Grey Dock Entrance Building" :D

What was the purpose of the place, anybody know?

Cheers,

It was the Victoria Royal Arch, built to commemorate a visit by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.  The visit was made in 1844 and the Arch was built between 1849 and 1853.  It was demolished in 1964 to make way for the new Tay Road bridge.  It had no functional purpose as far as I can see.

The architect also designed the Wallace Monument at Stirling.

PS there is a photo of it partly demolished on this page:

Thanks Nell! What a shame it was torn down.

Interestingly, one of the other photos on the site you gave me shows where Tindals Wynd used to be, which I was looking for in another thread...the photo is taken from the top of the Old Steeple.

I am learning so much about the city of Dundee!
