German Research - any hints?? - TREICHEL
« on: Friday 29 January 10 00:57 GMT (UK) »
My stepdaughter has given me a lot of documents pertaining to her german great grandfather. There is a copy of a family tree which is beautiful but hard to decipher. The family name is Treichel, and apparently before they came to Germany they were from Koslin/Pommern which is Poland??
I hae no idea where to go from here - can anyone suggest anything?
Regards
Jan

Post your request on the "Europe" board here (under "Research in Other Countries".  There are people there who know about/ live in Germany, and I'm sure you'll get help from them.

The first thing you need to do is establish the exact place of origin - this is true of nearly all continental European research.

In this case, also you need to find out the religion: were they Roman Catholic, for example, or Evangelical Lutheran? While civil registers may be available (depending on the date), it is likely that you will find that you have to search by place + date + religion. In other words, you don't want to go searching the Catholic records if they were Lutheran!

Original records may be in Germany but are just as likely to be in Poland; some may have been microfilmed by the Latter Day Saints. Unless you can read German Gothic fraktur script fluently (no easy task), however, you may struggle to understand the records yourself.

FRANZBURG, DORSENTIN, KOSLIN, ALTMARRIN, ZANOW

These are the place names (I think that's what they are) where my TREICHEL's lived or were born. Where are they?

A couple more questions - is Bauer born?
What is geboren, verstorben and verheiratel (marriage?)

I have a letter by someone who I assume is a relative, written in 1930 from Koslin-Pom BuchwaldstraBe 26. The writer is a Paul-Gerhart Treichel and I think the word underneath his signature is Kapitauleutnant A. D. (There is a photo of a man in uniform attached).

Another clue I have is that another relative, Paul Treichel was a Pastor in Franzburg? No dates but I would guess, from other dates, that he was born about 1880-1890.

As you may have guessed I can not understand the German language.

Jan

Bauer = Farmer (possibily an Ag. Lab.)

geboren (geb.) = born
sterben = to die, verstorben (verst.) = died
Heirat = marriage, verheiratet (verh.)  = married

Franzburg is in N.E. Germany, probably then in Prussia

Try entering the other place names in a search engine :

good luck,
Bob

Hi Jan,

can you give a bit more information about the family Treichel.  I  have had a look around and have found a forum of people with that name.

http://baseportal.de/cgi-bin/baseportal.pl?htx=/margret_ott/forum&wcheck=1&Pos=2216.05

There is an English part to it - see how you get on.

Viv

Modified (1):  Have just found a home page for a Family Treichel - might be worth a look, although it is in German - maybe you would write to them (I am sure they would understand a little English) if there is any connection.

There is a two volume Treichel family history self published by Ferdinand Traichel in 1968 and 1970.  You could try looking at copies.

There is a section of Poland / Ukraine that is 11 miles wide and has switched ownership from Poland / Ukraine several times
I wonder if this Ferdinand Treichel is related to your Treichel roots ??
