1861 Joseph McCulloch
« on: Wednesday 03 February 10 17:43 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace Joseph McCullock born in Dumfries abt 1838, I noticed a marriage in Sep 1860 in Swansea, not sure who the bride is, could be Catherine or Eliza
I wonder if they appear on the 1861 census in the Swansea area

Hello Brian,

I can't see him in the Swansea area but there is this one - I know you have been searchihng in the Cumberland area so...  ??? :-\
I can't see though that this would be the marriage in Wales  :-\

1861 RG9; Piece: 3900; Folio: 77; Page: 27
Townhead West Penrith

Joseph MacKolick lodger married 22 yrs Tramp b Dumfries
Margaret MacKolick lodger 18yrs Tramp's Wife b Driffield Yorks
John MacKolick lodger 6 months  Tramp's son b Cumberland Cockermouth

they are with lots of other 'tramps' including
James MacKolick 13yrs born Durham

Don't know if it is a possibility but sounds similar  :D

Thanks Heywood

I never cease to be amazed by the skill of the work done on rootschat, how on earth did you come up with Mackolick instead of McCulloch and I think HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD.
This sounds very much like them, I went to Swansea simply because it was the only Joseph McCulloch to be found.
You will probably have seen that I'm also searching for Joseph's sister Elizabeth, there seems to be a commonality around Penrith/Cockermouth

James is a new name, need to do some more looking but they were in Durham
abt 1848

I can't really take any credit- I just searched for Joseph b 1838 Dumfries and that came up  :D and thought it sounds good!

It's lucky, if it is him, that he gives right birthplace and year.

I looked for Elizabeth in similar fashion but couldn't find her as McCulloch variation - that was just in England.

Fantastic, I think this must be the 12th different spelling of the surname.

All the McCulloch children seem to have ended up as hawkers.

Have a found a James MacCullock b Dec 1847 in Durham but son't think it is mine as his sister Catherine born 10th Oct 1847.

What a chase this family has led us, which I will continue tomorrow

Very many thanks
Brian
