Charles Murray
« on: Thursday 04 February 10 19:37 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have a Charles Murray, a fishmonger, in their Tree?  He possibly lived in the Wolverhampton area in 1900/ 05 and would have been my greatgrandfather if I could find him.  His son, Edward, was my grandfather who stated that Charles was a fishmonger on his marriage certificate and was not registered as deceased.
Any help much appreciated. Mike Davies

Hi Tazzie.  Edward was born about 1881, can't be more specific on that date sorry.  Edward married Phoebe Ella Bywater in Wolverhampton on December 9th, 1905 and then moved to Wrexham.

  Hi Mike......

I can see who I think is Edward in 1891 as newphew to John Lawton & family in Wolverhampton..... John Lawtons parents are William & Julia Lawton and in 1881& 1891 they have a Frederick Murray b 1878 as a grandson.
  1881 Skinner St Wolverhampton    rg11/2797 f 59 p5
William Lawton hd m 58 wood turner Wolverhampton
 Julia                  wi m 55                       Brosley
Julia                 dau u 15 no occ            Wolverhampton
 William             son u 11scholar                        "   "
 Frederick Murray g/s u 3                                  "     ".

 William & Julia had daughters Louisa @ 1853     Mary Ann@1857     Elizabeth@ 1859 Jane @ 1862             Martha@ 1864.
Louisa marries Richard Jewsbury in 1873. Their daughter is also with the Lawtons in 1891.
Jane marries James Lindsey Batt in 1886. So thats 2 ruled out. However cannot yet get a Lawton / Murrey/Murray marriage

Hi Tazzie.  I had already found the entry for Edward in 1891 and, many years ago when I first started researching my granddad(don't we all leave things too late?) I found him in my home village on electoral rolls for 1911 to 1913 where he used the name Edward Lawton Murray or Murray Lawton, it was not very clear on the document.  Of course finding his aunt and uncle sort of confrmed he was the right one.  In the 1991 census he just used the name Murray but the name of his wife was different, perhaps a mistake by the enumerator.  In the 1901 census there was an Edward Lawton, born in Wolverhampton in 1881, living in my home village but I cannot be sure it was him.  The only family I can find that comes anywhere close is Charles Murray who was an umbrella maker in Birmingham.
Both my granddads have difficult pasts but Edward id the most puzzling.  Many thanks for you input.

Hi Mike
I know it's been a long time since this was originally posted, but I notice you have the names of William and Julia Lawton in there...their daughter Louisa was my Great Grandmother...I don't have any particular knowledge off the top of your Murray connection, but if you haven't sorted it yet, I can have a delve.

Hi Andy.  Thanks for your reply.  No I have not got any further with Edwards relationship to the Lawton family.  I states in the census that he was a nephew but I can't find any other info.
