« on: Thursday 17 March 05 21:25 GMT (UK) »
Following on from So whats Henry's story.

I have done quite well so far and now just want to trace his mother Sophia Mellors (born 1828) in 1851 and 1841 possibly in Thoroton or Flintham.

Her father was possibly John

The spelling varies a bit Mellars, Mellows

Would like to find John Hemstock c 1794 (father of Henry) in the same years if poss

Thank you in advance for your help

Hiya :)

Well John Hemstock was easy enough to find in 1851 :-

HO107 2139 33 28
Flintham
John Hemstock head mar 54 castrator Notts. Flintham
Mary wife 61 Notts Shelton??
??Sarah dau 30 at home Flintham

Have to say the writing was almost illegible and I'm not at all sure of the daughter's name. Also wasn't very sure of the wife's birthplace, until I found this marriage entry

John Hemstock and Mary Ross 05/02/1816 at Shelton

Will have a further look for Sophia. Hope this helps in the mean time!

Hmmm Sophia not so easy! I have found her potential sisters Sarah and Ann as servants in the Bingham area, but no sign of Sophia.

Also in Thoroton, this could be her father. It appears to be a second marriage ... John Mellows married Alice Morley at Thoroton 04/12/1848

Thanks for this Heather,

Yes John Mellors must have married twice.
Sophia was born 1828 and I have found a reference to John Mellows and Elizabeth with children Sophia Sarah and Ann.

Thanks also for finding John Hemstocks marriage for me.

Now where is the illusive Sophia. She must have been what 23?  What could she have been up to

I have visions of this headstrong woman who does her own thing no matter what people think.

It must have been rare in those days to live with a man much older and have his children.

Just a further note on that 1851 for John and Alice Mellors. It suddenly occured to me that Thomas and Ann just might be Morleys despite being listed as Mellors.

Sure enough I found this baptism entry for Thomas ...baptised at Thoroton 18 Oct 1825 to Samuel Morley and Alice.

As for Sophia, I suspect she was in service somewhere like her sisters. Glad it was useful anyway!

Cheers again ;D

I would just like to find out now if Mary died as I would like to know why he did not marry Sophia.

She was 61 on this census so it is possible and Sophias son to John was born in 1857.

Can you help with this?

Now Sophia herself was born in Thoroton and baptised on 24 Mar 1827.

Her parents were John and Elizabeth Mellors.

I think John was born c1806 I dont have an age for Elizabeth and I think she possibly died young

Could one of you kind people find them on the earliest possible census in order that I know where and when they were born so as to trace this family back.
