Jemima Row's father - Seemas his name was Thomas?
« on: Saturday 06 February 10 14:18 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help.

I have a Jemima Row who married Joseph Wicks in Chiswick in 1842.  Up until now, I believed her parents were John Row of Wing and Ann Willis of Wraysbury, Buckingham who married in 1811.

Today I received Jemima's marriage certificate only to find the father's name was Thomas Row???  Both Jemima and Joseph were of Twinham Green at the time of their marriage

What is interesting is one of the witnesses to their wedding was a John Brown born in Buckingham around 1814.  Jemima remarried in 1869, following Joseph's death, to John Brown, so sure I have the correct people, but flumaxed over her father, Thomas.

The other witness was probably her sister Elizabeth Jane Row.  Elizabeth Jane was the name given to the birth of Jemima and John's first daughter born in 1845

Can anyone find the possible marriage of Thomas Row or any information which may throw some light on this

Many thanks

The IGI has a marriage of Thomas ROWE and Jane MANDERS on 4 June 1820 at Upton cum Chalvey, Bucks.  This is in the right area and about the right time to be the parents of Jemima who states in both 1851 and 1861 that she was born in Wraysbury, Bucks, about 1823.  The IGI does not include entries from Wraysbury so you will need to look at the parish registers.  Alternatively you could have a search done in the Buckinghamshire Family History Society's Databases for a very reasonable sum.  Contact them at http://www.bucksfhs.or.uk

From the Wraysbury parish registers:

Baptisms 1813-1851 (Ref: PR248/1/3)

30 Jul 1820  Eliza, dau of Thomas and Jane ROE of Wyrardisbury, labourer
20 Oct 1822  Jemima, dau of Thomas and Jane ROWE of Wyrardisbury, labourer
2 oct 1825  Elizabeth Jane, dau of Thomas and Jane ROWE of Wyrardisbury, labourer, born 7 Sep

I found no further baptisms to this couple, nor did I find burials for Thomas or Jane up to 1880 so it seems that the family moved elsewhere.

Thomas ROWE might be the person baptised in the parish on 19 Jun 1791, son of Robert and Jane ROW.  Robert ROW and Jane FOSTER married at Wraysbury on 14 Jan 1786.

Bucks FHS have transcribed and published the parish registers of Wraysbury - see their website for more details regarding price etc. http://www.bucksfhs.org.uk

Thanks Orpheus
After your suggestion I visited their website and it is brilliant and had requested some information through them which I have just received and matches your latest reply, though I didn't have anything about Eliza or Elizabeth Jane or the maiden name of Jane.

I'm wondering Jemina had a brother called William as the 1861 census RG09 65 67 39, has a Eliza Wicks working as a servant living in the household of a William Row and she is identified as a niece. William was born in 1828, a Labourer born in London.  Perhaps Thomas moved to London between Elizabth Jane and William as you mentioned you find no buriels?.

Yes, Thomas and Jane and their family must have moved from Wraysbury to Chiswick some time between the births of Elizabeth Jane and William.  They also had another son - Robert - born around 1834.  Some time between 1833 and 1837 Thomas died and Jane remarried.  I have not been able to find a marriage for her but this is the family in the 1841 census in Chiswick:

Ref: HO107/689/1  Folio 31 Chiswick

John CRESSWELL, 40, Ag lab, Not born in the county
Jane CRESSWELL, 40, Not born in the county
William ROW, 13, Born in the county
Robert ROW, 8, Born in the county
Sarah CRESSWELL, 2, Born in the county

In 1851 the families are still in Chiswick, living not far from each other:

Ref: HO107/1699  Folio 404  Schedule 76 - Gunnersbury Place, Chiswick

Joseph WICKS, Head, Mar, 31, Labourer, born Middx Harefield
Jemima WICKS, Wife, Mar, 27, born Bucks, Wraysbury
Elizth Jane WICKS, Dau, Unm, 6, born Middx Chiswick
Eliza Ann WICKS, Dau, Unm, 4, born Middx Chiswick
Daniel WICKS, Son, Unm, 2, born Middx Chiswick
Jno Jas ROWE, Nephew, Unm, 2, born Middx Chiswick

Ref: HO107/1699  Folio 431 Schedule 155 - 2 Square, Turnham Green, Chiswick

William ROW, Head, Mar, 23, Ag lab, born Middx Chiswick
Rebecca ROW, Wife, Mar, 22, born Middx Chiswick
Thomas ROW, Son, 8 months, born Middx Chiswick
Amelia TIDERMAN?, Sister-in-law, 13, born Middx London

Ref: HO107/1699  Folio 436 Schedule 182 - 24 Square, Turnham Green, Chiswick

John CRESSWELL, Head, Mar, 40, Ag lab, born Surrey Lambeth
Jane CRESSWELL, Wife, Mar, 42, born Bucks Wraysbury
Robert ROWE, Son, Unm, 17, Fishmonger, born Middx Chiswick

In 1861 Jane is still in Chiswick:

Ref: RG9/780  Folio 55 Schedule 130 - 7 Pack.....?, Chiswick

John CRESSWELL, Head, Mar, 58, Labourer, born Surrey Lambeth
Jane CRESSWELL, Wife, Mar, 62, born Buckinghamshire
John ROW, Grandson, Unm, 12, born Chiswick

I think the above John ROW living with John and Jane in 1861 is the same child who was living with Joseph and Jemima WICKS in 1851.

WOW, this is great.  I had Joseph and Jemina living in Chiswick.  They were living in Turnham Green at the time of their marriage.  Didn't realise Thomas had died though I couldn't find him in later census so it seems logical.

Its supper time now so will have a good look around the census later.

Thank you so much with all this information, it really is a great help.

Kind regards
