Stirlings living on land of Castle Glorat
« on: Wednesday 10 February 10 01:46 GMT (UK) »
I need some help with finding the home of Joseph Stirling. According to the 1841 census he lived at the castle in the parish of Campsie, with his father William and mother Emily(Amelia) Stirling.
In 1851 he is still living with his family at the  castle land of Glorat. Amelia his mother is still at the castle in 1881 census., by this Joseph and another brother Robert had left Scotland and were living in Queensland Australia. The family was not wealthy and lived on this land with other families. I would like to know the name of the castle the land was on. It is close to Craigshead ,Milton Village, and Baldoran. I have looked at present day maps and seen some of the landmarks, but not the castle  but maybe someone with local knowledge can tell me what Castle Land of Glorat means and some associated history, please.

Hi chrismar,

Have a wee look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stirling_Baronets

Seems some of the Stirling Family were Baronets 'of Glorat'.

And here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clan_Stirling

'Glorat' being the Stirling Family home

And for a description of Glorat House, see here: http://www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/search_item/index.php?service=RCAHMS&id=45197

and: http://www.parksandgardens.ac.uk/index2.php?
option=com_parksandgardens&task=site&id=4472&preview=1&Itemid=293

And last, but not least ........ a picture of Glorat House, see: http://www.scran.ac.uk/database/record.php?usi=000-000-516-227-C

Sorry this message is just links to here, there and everywhere, but at least now you'll know what 'Glorat' was!!

Presumably there were many familes living on the 'Lands of Glorat' as on the 1881 Census, there's families living at: Glorat, Glorat Mill, Glorat Mill Gate, 2 Private Houses near Glorat Pit Limeworks, Glorat House and Glorat Lodge.

I see from Amelia's entry on the 1881 Census she was born in Denny (also Stirlingshire) she is a widow and her occupation is given as 'Annuitant' - so she must have had money of sorts which possibly came from her deceased husband ........ if he was one of 'The' Stirlings?

Living with her at 'Castle' was her grandson John Malloch age 5 who was born at Milton (of Campsie).

There is only one Emily Stirling death in Stirlingshire between 1881 - 1900 (Scotland's People - http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk ) - might be worthwhile downloading the certificate to have a look where she died, who the informant was etc.

Anne

Thank you Anne for your great information. I am not sure my Stirling family were related to the Stirlings of Glorat, though they were all educated and my gggrandfather mentions briefly a castle, I can not help but think they were more likely tennants on the grounds somewhere. William Stirling's (Joseph's Stirlings  father ) older brother and sisters were born in Kirkintilloch Dunbarton to parents John Stirling and Margaret Lang.
It is something special to see Glorat House and grounds, again thank you for your help and I will check up on Emily Stirlings(NEE McNie) death.
