Edward Insull/Insell Dudley
« on: Wednesday 10 February 10 18:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I have been going through my information for Edward Insull born around 1826 in Dudley, and I am not sure if the early information that I have is correct, also I am unable to find his birth or parents. Here's the information that I have so far:

1841 census HO107/piece 1196/district 10/page 1/5 or
HO107/1196/6/28/4

1851 census HO107/piece 2032/folio 184/page 30

1861 census with wife Sarah Jane RG9/2055/50/12

1871 census RG10/3011/56/29

Then his death in June 1879

I also do not have his marriage, I am unable to buy certificates.
Any help would be great

Hi - did you get any farther in this search. I have the same blockage. If I search Insull (or similar) nationally then it appears most were in work houses so is likely Edwards parents/family were fragmented. The only other hope is to assume" he was born in Dudley (I know it states on census but I see many birthplaces change a lot) and start visiting parish registers or even the workhouse registers.

I have Insulls & variations in the Dudley/Stourbridge area. One of the most common alternatives is Ensall.
I understand that the name is derived from Henzell who were a French family of glassmakers who set up business in the Stourbridge area in the early 1700s.
One of my 3xg grandfathers was a glassmaker in Old Swinford &  named one of his dughters Henzey as a mark of repect to his employer.

Many thanks, that's interesting... I'd not seen any Ensalls, only variations beginning with I... I've now tried with AN, EN, IN, ON and UN but sadly I still can't find Edward's birth nor his marriage which is likely to have been around 1853-1858...  thanks for your help!

Good Afternoon
Could this be the family?
Samuel and Elizabeth Insell cordwainer Dudley
Henry 25.1.1819 St Thomas Dudley
William 18.3.1821 St Thomas Dudley
Ann 22.12.1822
Edwin26.12.1824
Samuel 11.5.1828.
The entries are transcripts on Familysearch and Freereg.Could they have mistaken Edwin for Edward?
Brother William got married to Charlotte Powell Dec 1842 at Hereford so they are moving arround.
Edward seems to have married 3.6.1852 at Pensnett to a Hannah Gutteridge .
He's age 26 s of Samuel and she is 20  d  of Benjamin Gutteridge.
Which doesn't explain where Sarah appears from.

ps Hannah Insull may have died Dec 1854 Dudley
Father Samuel Insell buried Dudley St Thomas age 53 21.2.1836
1841 census Priory St Dudley
Elizabeth Insull 55 Ind n
James 26 basketmaker y(born 1815 on 1851 census)

Hi - thanks. I have some facts that match but others that don't. I know Edward had a brother William and was living with him in 1851 census. William was married to Charlotte and I'd also identified that as Charlotte Powell with the wedding registered in Hereford. So that would seem it must be the same Edward/Edwin. I have Sarah Jane as his wife in 51 and 61 Census and so had disregarded the "Hannah Gutteridge" which I'd also found. I know the Sarah Jane line is true as that is the route I have come up to find Edward and I have Edward and Sarah Jane (of Union Street, Dudley) on the Birth C of their daughter Sarah Eleanor Insull (my great grandmother...). Following your mail it made me think to check Hannah Insull deaths and there were two in Dudley (54/56) so maybe he married Hannah, she died very shortly after and he married again. His first child with Sarah Jane was in '57 so there could have been time...

Sorry I have not replied to this thread.
Looking into it tonight, there are three deaths for a Hannah Insull:

Q4 1854 Dudley
Q3 1856 Stourbridge
Q4 1856 Dudley

Reading between the lines [my excuse is that it is late!!], could the one in Stourbridge be Hannah Gutteridge and perhaps the last one in Dudley be a daughter? Maybe she died in child birth and the baby followed soon after?
Many thanks.
