« on: Friday 12 February 10 17:04 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for information on my great grandfather James Williams born in Stockport approx 1840.  His father was Roger Williams (no further information).  James married Sarah Ann Whitehead in Dentom Manchester in 1880.  I cannot find Roger in the census or BMD.  CAN ANYONE HELP WITH THIS PLEASE?

Abbie,

Do you have James and and Sarah's marriage certificate and if so, does it say whether Roger is deceased at that time?

I have James and Sarah's marriage certificate and Roger was alive at the time of the marriage.  He was a shoemaker.

Found them in 1851
HO107/2155/154/30
4, Allcocks ?

Roger Williams, 49, Cord Winder, Liverpool
Elizabeth, 48, Stockport
Hanna, 14
James, 12, Doffer
Charles, 8

Hanna has an occupation but I am struggling to read it.  All offspring born Stockport.
Cord Winder will be Cordwainer = shoemaker.

This looks like the family in 1841 but Roger isn't listed.

 Edward St. Stockport HO107/113/7

Elizabeth Williams, 35, Shoe Binder
Edward, 15
Mary, 14
Hannah, 5
James, 2

I'll see if I can find Roger somewhere else.

I am using An*****y, yes but he has been transcribed as Roger William - no 's' on the end. The original image definitely says Williams.

Can't find Roger in 1841? ???

Thanks Jen
I will see if I can find them.  I see from your search interests you list Williams in Hants.  I also have Williams in Hants, in Portsmouth.
Thank you so much for your help.  I was floundering.

No problem - it sometimes just takes an extra pair of eyes or a different way of approaching a problem. :)

My Williams family was from Portsea but I know very little about them, other than Ann, born around 1812, daughter of Emmanuel Williams and Ann Grose. Ann married Samuel Cant in Essex and was my 3 x great grandmother.
