Hi Abbie,

Have a look at www.cheshirebmd.org.uk - the mother's maiden name is given for some districts and Stockport is one of them.

There is a birth for a James Williams in 1839 and a Charles in 1843 which might fit the census details from 1851.  Mother's maiden name is WHITTAKER / WHITAKER.

Possible marriage is:

Roger WILLIAMS m Elizabeth WITTAKER [sic] 24 Jun 1822 at Cheadle.  You would need to purchase the birth certificate for one of the children born after 1837 to be sure.

Hope this helps,

Jean

Thanks Jean, thats very helpful.  I did find an entry on Family Search for a marriage for Roger Williams and Elizabeth Whittaker but without another site entry to verify it is difficult to be sure.  I will look at the site and get a copy of the certificate.  Have you ordered any certs from that site or do you go through PRO.

Thanks Genjen also for your help with this search.  This site is amazing!

Hi Abbie,

You can order from either local or general register offices, but the index references are different so don't mix them up!!

The cost is the same, the only difference is that if you are reference checking the local office doesn't charge if there is no match, but GRO do.

That makes sense.  I have ordered through PRO but not from local offices.  I did wonder about the reference from Cheshirebmd?  I will give them a go.  Thanks again for your help.  Its a shame they only go back to 1837.
