Hi Empty,, I've found an Alexander McElhinney b 23rd July 1819
Townland of Leat More - Clondavaddog COFI  Father was John
McElhinney and Mother Catherine Alcorn.

I'll see if I can find any details on John McElhinney..

Anne, this is really useful - thank you! My cousin & I are going to Clondavaddog next month and really needed a starting point - Leat More will be it. The IGI had given us two Alexanders to go on, both with a sister Rebecca (she appears on the census in Glasgow later...) but our gut instinct had always been towards Catherine & John because these names appear through the family.
I really appreciate your help!

Excitment.....

I have now got info about my Irish 2xGt grandparents:

Andrew Gailey - widower full age (how annoying is that!) Farmer from Tullygay married
Anne McElhinney spinister full age (aargh!) from Rossbracken on 17 Jan 1867.  Both Presbetyrian married in Manorcunningham.

Anne's father was James McElhinney farmer
Andrew's father was Daniel Gailey farmer.

witnesses were Robert McElhinney and Margaret Colhoun.  Guess that Robert was possibly Anne's brother??

Do these McElhinney's match with anybody's or can any light be shed on this branch of McElhinneys.

This looks like Andrew and Anne(Nancy) in 1901.

That fits - ooh and a son Daniel.

Now found Andrew's death in 1902 - registered by his son Daniel address Tullygay.

1911 census shows Daniel as still single living with a young female servant.
I wonder whether Gt Gt Uncle Daniel Gailey got married and had children after 1911.  How to find that out?

There is an elder sister Elizabeth born 1868 but not on 1901 census so perhaps she married.

Note to self must contain my enthusiasm  :D

On the subject of McElhinneys, I'm trying to trace mine back from Glasgow to Donegal around 1870's, starting with my gt grandfather Alexander who married Catherine McFadden in All Saints Parish, Newton Cunningham 1872. (Kate came from Falcarragh).

I'm assuming all my McElhinneys came from the same place. I've had hits for Alex's siblings on the Irish Family History Foundation website:
William baptised 1857, Denis 1859, Patrick 1861 and Elizabeth 1864.
I've had no luck with the LDS site.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for my next inquiries?  ???
