Young famly, Castle Douglas.
« on: Monday 15 February 10 22:09 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Can anyone please advise on where the Young family resided in Castle Douglas during the early 1800s?    Father and son, both named William, were wine merchants in C.D. where son, William, was also a magistrate and provost.   Any info. on where their shop may have been will also be of interest.    Also:- was there a house named "Glenshinnoch" in the town or area?..... from where did the family originate?..... was there a link to Sir William Douglas?    All probably a tall order but many thanks anyway.
Bob.

Hi Bob

There's a baptism for a William Young in  1812, Castle Doublas (Kelton):

20th August 1812 William son of William Young, Cashier of the Galloway Bank and Jane Douglas, spouse.

Also a record of a son, Allan, born 4th August 1812 to the same parents.

Strange entry. I think they might have been twins.

Baptisms of children of William Young and Jane Douglas:

9 June 1811 Sarah Kennedy Young
30 Jan 1814  Jane Douglas Young
25 Feb 1821  Margaret Young
10 Nov 1822 Helen Young

All bpt. Kelton

It looks as if it's one of those female-only IGI batches so no males showing. The two that I found (William and Allan)were from Scotlands People.

Hey Gadjet....so much info. in such a short time!!  Great stuff and many thanks.   This now gives me several clues to pursue,  e.g.  baptisms at Kelton, Galloway Bank, Douglas spouse, Minnigaff, etc.!   I am fairly new to much of this but I now have a head start,  thanks to your sleuthing.   I shall now get down to stitching the info. together and try to find more on the Provostship possibility, Glenshinnoch, etc.   Perhaps there may also be clues associated with Kelton Church, given the baptisms there.
Many thanks again,
Bob.

Don't worry,  Bob,  I like flying  ;D

It might be worth you checking Wills on the Scotlands People site  - www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Also the local studies section at Castle Douglas Library were very helpful towards me when I called in. I'm not sure about remote contacts but here's a link:
