Looking for the death after 1861 of Walter Biggar b 1781 Ettrick, Selkirk

He was aged 80 on 1861 Census for Ettrick Selkirkshire and had lived all his life there.

I would have thought him easy to find but cannot. No sign of death of a Walter Biggar 1861 - 1890! ???.

Anyone help?
Thanks

Hi Ogleway

Have you looked at the death for a Walter Biggar in 1862 in Eltrick? For some reason that I don't know, some death entries around the early 1860s do not have the age indexed for searches on SP, however, when you look at the image on the death cert, the age clearly shows  ??? I think this is why on the SP search page it has the tick box 'Include Unrecorded Ages in Age Range' under the age range.

Monica

In SP put in all combos
DOB + 5 years, name, even tried soundex, years 1861 - 1901. Tried age range 80 - 120 and ticked box. Tried all places.
NO Walter Biggars b 1781 died according to SP 1861-1900!

Tried FreeBMD no luck in England either.

He is on every census 1841 - 1861 Selkirkshire with consistant age and name.

I tried DOB 1781 + 10 years and came up with 1 in 1867.
If it`s him its a big age difference! ???

Ogleway, you need to leave birth years off and also age ranges on the search screen. Simply put in his name and Ettrick, Selkirk. There is one entry in 1862 with the age at death left off on the search results. As mentioned, for some reason, there is a short period on SP where ages on the search index results is left off although the age should show on the actual image from similar entries I have viewed :) If you try to put anything in about ages it will give you zero results.

This is the entry I am seeing:

1862   Walter Biggar, no age in field, in ETTRICK   /SELKIRK. GROS ref: 774/00 0004

Thank you Monica for your helpful reply.

I misunderstood you first time! I have a habit of reading between and not on the lines!

All understood. `Tis no wonder I could not find death.
Did this time.  ;D

Thanks for your patience and I will keep that in mind for next time.

Ogleway :) :)

Ogleway. In Ettrick Kirkyard there is Walter Biggar a shepherd who died at Merlees 2-11-1862 aged 82yrs and Elizabeth Brydon his wife who died at Thirlstane Shank-end 2-1-1848 aged 48yrs . It also has their son John and his wife Eliza Scott their daughter Elizabeth and a Helen.

There is also another Walter Biggar an indweller of the parish of Ettrick who died 28-6-1784 aged 70yrs and spouse Helen Moor who died 20-10-1768 aged 50yrs  a son John and wife Margaret Johnstone  also Robert William and James who died in infancy.
This was probably walters father as one of the children was named Helen after the grandmother. If so this would take you back another generation and loads of children.
They are both recorded with photographs on Cds available from www.selkirkshireantiquariansociety.co.uk

Alan thank you so very, very much for all that information.
Terrific! :)

Yes, they will be the one family. We had found references to the people mentioned but you have confirmed.
A huge leap forward.

Thanks for the website too.
