Hodgkiss Herbert from Dudley
« on: Saturday 19 March 05 06:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,

I've been doing some research on my family name and I can't seem to get any further back then my grandfather without any certainty. Someone did post me some info on whom i belive to be my g grandfather herbert but i woudl like to go back further. if this is him, his fahter's name was abraham. how can i take it back to my ggg grandfather without joining these pay for services which i refuse to pay for.

1901 census index...

Herbert Hodgkiss  23 Staffordshire Hartshill Gloucestershire Cheltenham Ironmongers Assistant

This would make him alive at the time of the 1881 census, and the best match I could find for him is

Dwelling   29 Wood St, Dudley, Worcester, England

Abraham HODGKISS   Head   M   Male   33   Dudley, Worcester, England   Grocer
Emma HODGKISS   Wife   M   Female   30   Bristol, Somerset, England
George HODGKISS   Son      Male   6   Dudley, Worcester, England   Scholar
Frederick HODGKISS   Son      Male   4   Dudley, Worcester, England
Ellen HODGKISS   Daur      Female   2   Dudley, Worcester, England
***Herbert HODGKISS   Son      Male   3 m   Dudley, Worcester, England

Thanks,

Please help.

-Dave

The 1901 info you give for your Herbert seems to indicate he was born in Staffordshire perhaps?. If this is the case, I don't think the 1881 info you have is the right family.

You could try posting a request on the Staffordshire board on this site for a lookup in the 1891 census for your Herbert Hodgkiss. He would have been about 13 at the time and may have been living with his parents.

Your post may get a better response if it were posted elsewhere on this site like the common room or beginners board.

Hi Dave

Are you sure that the Herbert Hodgkiss in Cheltenham in 1901 is yours?

The original says he was born Hunts Hill, I believe. It's not too clear.

You title your message 'from Dudley'. Dudley is on the border of Worcestershire & Staffordshire - so the entry you have of a son of Abraham could be yours - if you are certain that he came from Dudley.

The age is 3 years out, but I cannot see a better match.

Hi Dave,

any connection to the Hodgkiss family from Staffordshire who were in Wainwright, Alberta, Canada in the early 1900's? There is also a Henry Hodgkiss age 17 in the 1901 census of Canada immigrated 1890.

Who was your grandfather and when did he come to Canada? Was he born here in Canada? When was he born? Any other information might lead to new leads.

I might be able to help find clues here in Canada that might help you.

Let me know
