Lookup surname BELL
« on: Thursday 18 February 10 11:42 GMT (UK) »
I'm wanting some help with finding a maiden name for a person in my family tree.

I have a James Bell born abt 1840 in Settle, UK.  According to the census of 1871 he is married to a Jane (maiden name unknown) and she is born abt 1841 in Burton, Westmorland. They have 7 children in total and their names are:

Charles E Bell born abt 1886 in Kirby
Annie M Bell born abt 1864 in Settle
James h Bell abt 1868 place unknown
Clara M Bell abt 1872 place unknown
Ernest E Bell abt 1881 in Gargrave
Fredrick L Bell abt 1877 Gargrave
Joseph W Bell date unknown and place Reastwick

We are trying to find Jane's Maiden name as all the records we can find show her name as being Bell obviously as she is married to James in the records.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to RootsChat RareSheel  :)

You would need to corroborate this by getting one of the children's birth certificates but my money is on this marriage:

Jun 1863 Settle 9a 29
James Bell to possibly Jane Leak
(found on www.freebmd.org.uk)

Ties in nicely with their oldest daughter being born in Settle around the same time.

The 1861 census has a Jane Leak age 20, born Dalton Westmorland, in service at Settle.

The IGI (free to search at www.familysearch.org) shows an extracted christening
Jane Leak, 15 Nov 1840 at Burton In Kendal, Westmorland, parents Thomas Leak and Sarah

Hi

Thanks Tati and Wozzle.

I suspect Tati is right, however I am a little unsure how to search on FREEBMD as I use ancestry for most of my searches.

If i may ask Tati, how did you find a potential Jane Leak being married to James, as when I tried on FREEBMD it just says Jane Leak, but no James, or was this done by searching for James??

Wozzle thanks for that, if our Jane is the same as Tati's Jane then I am inclined to agree with the info you have also got, could I ask where you got this info from?

Many thanks, I will get this information collaborated first though but it does look like one and the same.

It's the same whether you look for the groom or the bride - once you have identified a possible marriage (say, James Bell 1863 Settle), you can click on the page number to see the names of the possible brides.

I like ancestry's FreeBMD search engine for its speed but you can't beat FreeBMD's own search engine when you're trying to match a couple because they have a feature that ancestry don't (see below) - my search example will find the marriages for James Bell where one of the brides is called Jane

( It's not a 100% exact science due to possible mistranscriptions/missingentries but works most of the time.)
