  I am looking for the birth of Catherine Ross from Portree, Skye  born about 1890, she died about 1968 on the mainland.

Do you know her parents names or at least her fathers name?

If so - you can lookup her birth on Scotlands People which is a paysite

I have checked the 1891 and 1901 census but the nearest I can find is one b 1884 Portree Inverness

There is a Kate Ross b Portree Par 1893 on the 1901 census but she is living with Mathison grandparents

Thank you for your prompt reply, it is my granny I am trying to trace back, no one knows very much I am afraid other then that she was born in Portree, she was also known to some as Kate , don't know where to go next really, thank you again

A better starting point may well be her marriage.  If she married in Scotland then her marriage cert will show both her parents names and her mothers maiden name
