Tracing in Ireland
« on: Friday 19 February 10 02:09 GMT (UK) »
After just discovering that my paternal Grandfather, Samuel McClenaghan came to Scotland from Ireland at age 9, I have set out to try and trace his roots. This has proved to be a thankless task and I would be very grateful for any help that anyone could offer me. He was born in 1872 in Newry, County Down and as far as I can discover, his parents names were William (Father) and Sarah Hume (Mother). The town he lived in was Kilkeel. I also believe he had a Sister named Minnie.

Should anyone be able to help me with this, I would be eternally grateful.
Thank you.
McClenaghan/Mccleneghan

Small point, perhaps obvious, but Minnie is a pet name & not likely to be the registered name.

There is a Mary Jane also in 1872.

There are Margarets in Kilkeel in 1872, 75, 77 & 80.

I would also look for McLenaghan, and perhaps other variations.

Thank you so much for that Allan. Perhaps there were two marriages or the records I found were wrong. Shall try on those lines. Great help. Thanks so much. Fiona

Hello again.I relalise it has beeen a long time since i wrote to you but had to try and gather certain facts together re my Grandfather, Samuel McClenaghan. As you said he was bor in Kilkeel in 19872 to WilliamMcClenaghan and Sarah Hume. I have since discovered thatWilliam his father died on 8th May in 1892 as was listed as  Down Residence Cosgrave Street Belfast. My GRandfather moved to Scotland when he was 8 years of age and liveed in Tollcross Glasgow. Now I am at a sticky wicket as my Dad will not talk about his Father nor the family but I would love to discover more. Can you point me in any direction please?

Thank you so much

Hi,
There is a will abstract for a William McClenaghan in PRONI. See http://applications.proni.gov.uk/DCAL_PRONI_WillsCalendar/WillsSearch.aspx
Unfortunately there is no image of the will but probate was granted to Catherine the widow???
