amalgamating Family Tree Maker
« on: Saturday 20 February 10 22:04 GMT (UK) »
I have managed to resuscitate an older and better laptop with most of my FTM data on it.  But in the last 6 months have been using a replacement laptop so have  an amount of new material is on that in a Family Tree Maker program.

Is it possible to merge the two bodies of data? I would like to go back to using the older and better laptop.   I have tried backing up to a memory stick but that did not seem to work nor sending myself a GED file though maybe I did not set it up properly.

I apologise for my ignorance and if this topic has already been covered.

I use FTM2005, which doesn't like exporting/importing to or from a memory stick.

What I do is export the Gedcom to the hard drive, copy it to the stick, copy the file from the stick to the second computer's hard drive, and merge the file from there.

I also back up all the files beforehand.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks for that.... yes I have version 2006 and know there was some convoluted way that I moved stuff before.  I rechon I will be a bit more computer literate by the time I work this one through :)

I use FTM 2009.   I have had success with merging two trees, I think the trick is to make one person the "merge" person and carry on from there.

I've done this a few times, the first time I didn't make a back up and it took forever to re-do all the errors.

Hope this helps
