I think Joseph's wife might have been Margaret Ann Proudlock, but I can't be sure. That would explain their boarder in 1881 - Alexander Proudlock, he was boarding with them. Perhaps he is related.

I can confirm from a Family Tree for the surname 'Proudlock' (compiled by a Wes Proudlock now living in Australia) that Margaret Ann Proudlock, born 1852 in Durham, England, married Joseph Whitehead in 1874. They had one child Mildred Margaret Whitehead who was born in 1876. Alexander Proudlock was her brother, he was born in 1860 in Durham and died 1931 in Yorkshire, I have details of his wife if you need them. Margaret and Alexander's parents were George Proudlock and Margaret Grant and they married on 11 March 1848.
