Sarah Ann Butterfield
« on: Thursday 25 February 10 16:23 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me with my search for information on my paternal grandmother, born in 1886, died 1956 in Castleford, W.R.  Her father was Walter Scopes.

She was married to Ernest Butterfield (1882-1942), and married in 1905 in Castleford.  Her last address was 54 Wellington Street, Wheldon Lane,Castleford.  The inquest into her death was held on 17th October 1956 and I would like to trace descendants of her daughter Alice who lived in Castleford.  I would love to find photos and information about my Yorkshire relatives.  My father was Thomas Edward, the youngest child of Sarah and Ernest.  Alice was born in 1908.  CherylAnn

Best thing to do is get a subscription to ancestry.co.uk - the UK package, which ranges froma bout £70-110 / year off the top of my head. You can get access to it at a lot of libraries too.

Then the next thing you will need is an accont at 192.com or their DVD version called UK Info Disc Pro. This has all the electoral registers on with the address and phone numbers from dir. enquiries. I have found loads of relatives with this. If you can't get a phone number, do a neighbour search and phone them up to get their number  :P

Thanks for this lead - I am already a subscriber to Ancestry.co, and have found some information, but will check out the other websites.

Hi Cheryl
I stumbled across your post regarding Sarah Butterfield (maiden name Scopes). I have been doing some intense digging into my family history and have found Sarah Butterfield is my great, great grand mother.
My Nan was Sylvia Hughes (Stewart) who was the grand daughter of Sarah. My Nan told me all about how her grand mother threw herself into a river as she had severe arthritis. I haven't found anything official on this until now.
I am trying to dig even deeper down the rabbit hole. I suppose this means we're also related. Any information you could help me with would be great.
I am also trying to track what happened to my great grand mother, the daughter of Sarah, Emma Stewart (Butterfield). Who disappeared during the WW2 years and nobody ever knew what happened to. Now due to more info coming to light I feel as though her story may be undiscoverable.
It would great to hear from you.

Thank you very much.

Kind Regards
Alister

Hello Alistair and welcome to RootsChat.

Unfortunately CherylAnn hasn't been online here since 2010, however if she still has the same email address she will receive notification of your post.

Not sure what information you have already, but you can see Sarah BUTTERFIELD and her family here in the 1911 census.

I'm assuming Emma was born Sep qtr 1921 ( Pontefract 9c/268)?

Sarah was last seen alive 11 Sep 1956. Her probate attached.
It looks like there is a newspaper report about her death, I don't have access to the whole article however you could access it on findmypast or British Newspaper Archive (subscription sites, though you may get a few articles free on BNA)

The article in the paper doesn't say very much.

Bradford Observer 13 September 1956

BODY IN CANAL - The body of a 64 year old widow, Sarah Hannah Butterfield, of 107 Gilstead Lane, Gilstead, Bingley, was recovered from the canal near Dubb Bridge, Bingley, yesterday.
