« on: Friday 26 February 10 01:16 GMT (UK) »
Elizabeth Cottee was my g grandma. She married Alfred John Howe who was an outfitter in colchester and they lived at diamond cottage hospital road st mary at the walls in 1888 when they had my grandad Arthur Claude Howe.
I am trying to trace the Cottee family who i believe were huganoes from belgium. Any help would be gratefully recieved.
thankyou

Hi Draceana,

Elizabeth's birth place is shown as Great Totham in 1891. Also, she marries as Eliza instead of Elizabeth.

This looks like a good candidate to me in 1871:

1871
RG10/1674 152 5
Great Totham, Essex
Nr Compasses

Willm Cottee, head, 55, Labourer, b. Essex Gt Braxted
Matilda, wife, 44, b. Gt Totham
Robert, son, unm, 21, Labourer, b. do.
Arthur, son, 13, b. do.
Golden, son, 12, Labourer, b. do.
Eliza, dau, 8, b. do.
Willie, son, 5, b. do.
Chas, son, 3, b. do.

Good find Tati  :)

on a certain site, the surname has been mistranscribed as Coller  >:(

As Tati cites, she was married as Eliza and per the census 1871, her mother was Matilda.

Eliza Matilda's birth was registered; Mar. quarter, 1863, Maldon, page 218.

thankyou so much for this info, i do appreciate it.
I am a trifle confused though as i thought they were farmers in the dedham area of colchester, i understood they owned the farm. I do not know what the farm was called and not sure how to progress to find out more.
Thanks again.

Really not sure how to progress on that one either because the census definitely suggests otherwise  :-\

Just checking whether one of the children went on to own a farm maybe but I'm not having any luck. Can't find Robert born ca. 1850 after 1871. William born ca. 1866 is an omnibus driver in Hanwell Mddx in 1901. Charles is seen as a butcher in 1891, Golden is a Coachman in 1891 and 1901. Arthur born ca. 1856 becomes a Coffee House Keeper in London.
