Have you got access to Ancestry? If not, I can have a look around to see what we can find on James' family. Let me know  :)

Hi Monica,

The tree you mention is MY TREE.LOL :)
Umm I only have that small piece of info on him thats in that tree. Umm that's it. Im trying to see if the info I have is correct. If you wouldn't mind digging up anything Im more thangreatful for your help. It is believed Thomas basford Meikle had a sister Anne and a brother WIlliam which i cant find a record for. I will have a look at the Scot's Site and see if I can discover anything. Since I didn't know that site existed.

Thankyou again :)

 ;D I'm glad it's your family tree!

John Meikle and Annie Cairns marriage shows on 16 JUL 1869 Tradeston, Glasgow on IGI at www.familysearch.org (the image of the marriage entry available on SP).

Another child shows for them on IGI, ELIZABETH CRAWFORD MEIKLE Birth: 29 AUG 1872 Bridgeton, Glasgow. IGI stops for Scotland around 1874ish when the Mormons stopped loading on Scottish entries.

This looks to be John and Annie with James in 1871:

John Meikle 23, bricklayer b. England
Annie Meikle 25 b. Glasgow
James Meikle 11 months b. Glasgow

Address: 91 John St, Bridgeton, Glasgow

And in 1881:

John Meikle 33
Annie Meikle 34
James Meikle 10
Elizabeth Meikle 8
Martha Meikle 6
Annie Meikle 3
John Meikle 10 Months

Address: 91 John St, Bridgeton, Glasgow

John and Annie's marriage will give you their parents' names, including mothers' maiden names to let you work back to their families. This will be a help in trying to find John's family in England.

Possible entry for 1891 for the Meikles. Likely mother Annie may have died and father John looks to have remarried by 1891:

John Meikle 43, Foreman Bricklayer b. England
Mary Meikle 43 b .Bridge of Weir, Renfrewshire
James Meikle 20 Publisher's Assistant
Elizabeth C Meikle 18
Martha C Meikle 16
Annie C Meikle 13

Address: 166 Claythorn St, Calton Glasgow

hi everyone i am back to researching again and yet again in need of help. its a long journey  :)

anyways further to the post before this one. monicaL has given the basis of the family i am searching, i am having trouble searching back from JOHN Meikle born approx 1848 going by census records in 1891 make his father to be James Meikle born abt 1820 mother susan Milne...... i can not find them anywhere that links me to anyone else. i then got james meikles parents as john meikle and agnes crawford from scotlands people for the death record of james meikle in 1894 yet that is where i stop with no record of them anywhere else..... my tree is the one you will find on ancestry. no one seems to talk about these meikles anywhere. we cant be the only line. Can we??

Hello...

I'm writing on behalf of my mother Serene Janet Miles who is the granddaughter of James Cairns Miekle and would like to provide this thread some information that may assist with the Miekle of Glasgow research.

James Cairns Miekle married Janet Basford at St Albans and their children are as follows:
- John
- Thomas
- James
- William (James nephew, who's mother passed at birth, taken into family as a baby)
- Janet
- Annie (1912 - mother of my mother)

James (Snr.) became an eminent figure in Glasgow book world. Publishers Manager for Oxford University Press for 50 years.

Thomas and William came to Australia under the "Big brother" movement - year unsure. Thomas did go back to visit his mother in 1930.

Thomas married Ena and had 5-6 children. Eldest Gordon who has Canadian citizenship and would visit Australian often to see his mother.

My mum is more than happy to provide further information if you have any queries that she could answer. Mum grew up with James (her grandfather) with her mother Annie as a baby through to teenage...

Feel free to contact me.

Regards,
Fiona
