Hi Carolyn,

I cannot find any entries for Cuthbertson at Newlands and I have now searched the whole book and can only find one Cuthbertson entry for a Janet Cuthbertson at Skirling Churchyard.

I have looked up Sandersonfor you to see if this interest you or if you wish to pursue this line as there are a few entries.   Maybe nothing of interest but thought I would just include them now.

Hello Brina,

I've just discovered one of my ancestors is buried in Newlands Churchyard. Would you mind checking if there is anything on Marion Johnston(e), nee Fairlie/Fairley please. She actually died  in 1858 but hopefully she may get a mention. I'd also be interested in any other Johnston(e)s or Fairlie/Fairley's in Newlands.

Thanks,
Canisp.

have just read your posting and have a little information which may be of interest to you.
Our farm was bought from the Johnstone family in 1969. The Johnstone's bought it from ?Major Thompson who sold off the Castlecraig estate of which our farm was a part of in the 1940's.They were the tenents up to then .
I don't know how long the Johnstone family were tenents on the farm prior to the 1940's.
Although we are in Newlands Parish, Castlecraig (formerly known as Kirkurd House) is in the Parish of Kirkurd which has it's own church-now disused, and graveyard.
It may be worth checking out Kirkurd Graveyard.

Hi Canisp.

You will be pleased with this I think.

I have taken this as it is printed from the Newlands entries.

Walter Johnstone d W Linton June 18??, w Marion Fairlie d Woodend 6.8.1858 56, da Ann 28.1.1900 6 (5), da Agnes 25.6.1914 83;  Wm Johnstone retired smith d Leith 8.1.1931 92

Walter Fairley late gardener Macbiehill 8.1.1820 52, w Janet Harper d ? aged 77, da Jean inf, s Wm late teacher Tweedsmuir d 19.3.1830 33

I think it is the top one that you are interested in but maybe the second is of some interest too.

I have checked the old burial ground at Castlecraig but nothing but in the Kirkurd records I found: -

(On back, carving of spade & rake crossed)
John Bailie late gardener Kirkurd 18.7.1811 83, w Marion Fairly 5.11.1787 55, da Jean 30.9.1771 4 first corpse buried in this graveyard

(With urn) John Swan mason Kirkurd 17.4.1792 54, w Margt Johnston 22.9.180(5) 6 (5), s John mason Harestane 8.8.184(3) 79 (w Janet Kemp 31.10.1860 94, great gs Alex Gibson s of Wm Gibson d May 1881 19);  Wm Gibson d Castlecraig 20.8.1904 72, da Margt 23.3.1885 17;  Janet Liddel w of Wm Gibson 21.3.1909 8 (9)

Good luck.

Brina :)

Thanks Avril,
I've not done much research into this line of my family but I will keep a note of that. My GG Grandfather was Adam Johnstone. He was married to Janet Brown in West Linton in 1857. They moved from the area around 1860-1863 and eventually settled in Kirknewton. Adam's parents were Walter Johnstone (Blacksmith) and Marion Fairlie, Walter's parents being James Johnstone (also a Blacksmith) and Agnes Gibson. I have them in the West Linton area back to around 1800 so there may well be a connection somewhere to the Johnstone family who previously owned your farm.

brina,
That's great, many thanks, there is a lot of info there that I do not have. I will need to check the detail on Janet Harper's husband - I have him as "Adam" Fairlie, Gardener at Macbiehill, taken from his daughters marriages in 1817, 1823 & 1826, and also his daughter Marion's Death Record in 1858. "William Fairley, Schoolmaster in Tweedsmuir Parish" was a witness at the 3 above marriages, presumably his sisters.

Thanks again,
Canisp
