Will of Thomas Rowlandson
« on: Sunday 28 February 10 16:56 GMT (UK) »
One last question about this will!  Can anyone decipher the name of Thomas's farm?  The name was used a number of times in the will, and I'm attaching 2 different instances--and can attach more if it will help.
(Also, I'd like to know where this farm was in Gray Rigg.  I'm going to be in Kendal for a week in April, and am planning to visit the areas where my ancestors lived--if I can find them!)
Thanks,
Bridget

It looks like Coatawaiste.
There is a place in Grayrigg the 1841 census called Coat O West, and the next property is called Dobsole, which ties up with extract two from the will.

On the 1841 census it comes between Grayrigg Head and Dobsole, so I think it must be around here http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=359500&Y=496500&A=Y&Z=120

Thank you so much for deciphering the place name--and finding out where it's located!

I've been trawling through these old maps. Nothing definite but it gives you another view of the area.

Hello BridgetM
Some years since your entry about Thomas Rowlandson's will.
As you know Dobsole/Dobshole/Dob's Hall is now identified as Dob's Hole, and is next to Coat o' West.
My great grandfather John Bateman's (1856-1925) first wife Jane Rawes (1860-83) was the granddaughter of Thomas Rawes of Dobsole.
Her mother Agnes Rawes (single at Jane's birth) married William Rowlandson of Deep Slack, Whinfell parish (near Grayrigg) in August 1860. William was almost certainly Jane's biological father. The three then lived at Dobsole for some years before moving to Whinhowe (farm), adjacent to Deep Slack. They eventually had a total of nine children. William's parents were Thomas and Agnes Rowlandson of Deep Slack.

I was brought up in that area, and would be very interested in learning more about the will you posted,
with best regards
