Hi J
I saw this post whilst browsing (note to self: Get a life!) and the Bredbury caught my eye - my childhood stomping ground. - also Brookshaw, which is in my inlaws history - but not from around Cheshire I think. SO, Couldn't help myself doing a bit of searching!
Apologies if you have done this already and got beyond this particular brick wall!
As you will have discovered, Bredbury, Romiley and Chadkirk are all VERY close together - about a mile between each I guess, and nowadays difficult to see where one starts and the other ends.
I know some of my family (well, in laws family) lived Bredbury and considered their parish church Romiley, being married and buried there. And as you can see from the info on Genuki, the parish registers at Bredbury didn't start until 1847 (why were you so convinced it would be at Bredbury?)
What makes it more confusing is that the big parish church at Romiley is called St Chad's and their registers don't seem to start until 1868, but only a mile away is St Chad's at
Chadkirk. This is a VERY old chapel, and St Chad's Chadkirk is given as place of residence on the christening records of the children of Thomas and Mary. Lovely pictures and some history of it here
http://www.thornber.net/cheshire/htmlfiles/chadkirk.htmlThis may well have been where they were all christened - it's all very idyllic.
I think with a distinctive name like Jonathan Bruckshaw, it would be difficult to find another in such a small area.
You have no doubt found all the children born to Thomas and Mary - Bettey, Sally, Hannah Maria, Joseph - the earliest 1785, as well as Jonathan in 1803, which makes the marriage of Thomas Bruckshaw and Mary Smith on 8 Nov 1784 at ST Mary's Stockport bang on. ST MAry's would have been THE big church to go to - and only about 2 miles from Bredbury.
The only marriage that comes up from Cheshire, Derbyshire and Lancashire (Bredbury and Romiley are very close to all three) is the one at Manchester Cathedral on 30 Oct 1831 to Sarah Shaw - an even MORE prestigious place to get married! And only about 6 miles away.
Ah well, I have idled away a couple of hours, retreading my childhood! Hope you didn't mind this little foray into your family!
Cheers from New Zealand!
