 Hi Grey Seagull,
I read some time ago that The Scottish Genealogy Society has a list of burials at Kilmalieu .  They are at 15 Victoria Terrace , Edinburgh. Ph +44 (0) 131 220 3677
I see a marriage in Inveraray -- Donald Rankin + Anne Anderson on 3 Jan 1811 - is that possibly your couple.
I was looking for my GGGrandparents Alexander Purdie + Mary Morrison in South Knapdale , Ardrishaig to be precise. I know he was the proprietor of The Argyll Arms there at the time of his death ( from his testament). Have not been able to find his burial place.
The point I am getting to is that there is a burial ground there called Lochead and another called Kilmallie. It is not surprising that some of these searches are difficult with so many similar names. Saw plenty of Rankin s and Mc Corquedales also.
Will ask my Historian contact about the plan for Kilmalieu.

Hi,

Donald Rankin b1821(app) m Agnes Anderson, daughter of John Anderson and Elizabeth(?) Campbell. The other Donald may be his uncle.

Yes, got a bit confused with all the similar names of burial grounds to begin with but looking at their locations and other research, Kilmalieu is the only logical one. However, I keep an open mind.

Will try the society you suggest. Had tried the council a couple of times, but the person responsible was never there...

Regards,
Grey Seagull

Hi Jean,

Finally made it to Kilmalieu today, and spent two hours looking for your gravestones.  Phoned for more detailed guidance, but for some reason, the gravedigger didn't seem to lay his graves out in straight rows, so it was difficult knowing exactly which row was which.

We had a good look around all the gravestones that were readable, but were not able to trace the two you mentioned.  I have taken some photos of the graveyard to give you an idea of what it looks like - sadly, not a sunny day - and also a few around the area where I think they should be.  However, I can't be too sure if they are accurate: often 'I' is missed out in lists, and not sure if the numbers refer to the gravestones or to the lair.  So, if you want to ask your contact for the row and number of the graves in the photographs, it might help pin them down.

I did manage to find the gravestone I was looking for!  The detail was quite good and Agnes Anderson's name, father's and husband's names plus date of death are all quite clear.  Amazing really, considering the condition of some of the other stones...

This is about the fourth time I have gone round this graveyard, so I hope that with the rows & numbers from the pictures, I might be able to find your gravestones on another visit (June/July at earliest).

As there are a lot of photos, and I still need to track down my pc link cable, I will email them direct.

Sorry the news wasn't better for now, maybe next time...

Regards,

Chris

Hi again Jean,

... my contact in Furnace...     ... did find amongst her other records a John Anderson married to an Elizabeth Campbell who had a daughter Agnes. He was deceased by 1858 and was a Brewer.

Just re-reading the posts and wondered what information your friend has that pinpoint's John Anderson's death to before 1858.  I am now as sure as one can be when dealing with parish records that this John Anderson is the Maltster referred to on the gravestone, and more importanly, the brewer of Agnes's death certificate.

Is it possible that your friend has burial information for John and his spouse Elizabeth Campbell?  :D

Regards,
Chris

Hi Dorothy,

Sadly, no time that day.  Just time for some fabulous shortbread and excellent coffee!

Maybe next time...

Does anyone have any idea who might have records of lairs or plots in Kilmalieu Cemetery Inveraray.
My parents, grand parents and great grandparents were born and lived in Inveraray. My family are interred there and my Mother said we have two plots. Argyll and Bute have no records for obvious reasons that in the 1800's and early 1900's there was no paperwork, only word of mouth by family.
Any advice would be very much appreciated
Thanks
Isabel
