Okay.  I think that I may have found father Benjamin aged 20 on the 1841 Census, before his marriage to Mary, occupation is Collier.  So that ties in with the coal mining theme.

However, I cannot find a son Benjamin born to a Benjamin whose occupation is in coal mining.  Of course he could well have changed jobs.... the most likely is a Benjamin to a Benjamin and Mary father's occupation is sawyer... as in wood.

Cheers

Wow! BJ and karen you are amazingly fast!

BJ: Unfortunately I don't think it's him. The Stocks family were we think involved in coal mining and brewing in the Halifax area, and there's a William Stocks buried in Lightcliffe Church. We think it was Benjamin's brother.

Karen: The Benjamin aged 20 sounds promising. Was he resident in Northowram?

I'm intrigued what you find. Thank you for your time!

I'm off to bed now. Will check tomorrow. You are awesome people here.

Roger

Your Benjamin born 1848 might well have been born in the Northowram area, but his father may not have been. Don't totally rule out what bjmachell found for you... keep it in mind as a possible.

This is the 1841 entry that I thought might be useful.

1841 Census England Yorkshire Batley Holbeck
HO107/1290/12/17
Clay Houses

STOCKS

Mary 60 Born in County
John 25 Collier Born in County
Benjamin 20 Collier Born in County
Joseph 15 Collier Born in County

Elizabeth 3 Born in County

I will keep looking while you sleep.... it's only lunchtime here in Oz... ;D ;D

Hmmm...not sure about this one though... if Mary was already a widow in 1851 how did she come to have son Henry in 1861.....??

Just a thought, but a dresser could be a stone mason.

Dresser: Worker in quarry cutting rocks to shape eg slates or setts.

Wow!

I can't tell you how fascinated I am with your results! My brother is also into this subject but lives in Lanzarote, and another relative in Cumbria too. What spurred me into action is the receipt of the birth certificate of Benjamin Stocks a few days ago. I've put out info requests on other sites before but none have been so fast as this site! I have contacted him with info I've gathered recently.

I draw your attention to this request from my brother:

It would seem your 1861 Hill Top reference is spot on!

Bilge! Thanks, I think Halifax Yorks is the focus but I'll keep him in the back of my mind.
