What does letter S mean at the end of a GRO index page number?
« on: Thursday 04 March 10 11:15 GMT (UK) »
I have seen this entry in the GRO index images for year 1974:

Deaths .....  Fulham  vol 12  page 0544S

What does the S mean?

The next entry below has an identical name with identical date of birth, but different page number. Could the same death have been reported twice? Perhaps once by a hospital and again by the family?

Hi Barbara,

It's a long time since you posted your "S" question. Did you find out what the "S" signifies. I would be interested to hear if you did.

In the GRO Death Index, I have found several search results which contain the abbreviation "DOR", as in the following: "GRO ref: Lancashire, DOR  Q4/2012 in Lancashire (591-1A)  Entry Number 507811500." Do you know what it means? I have run multiple Google searches but without finding the answer.

Hope you can help me out!

Cheers,  Peter

Looking at the death indexes randomly on the GRO website DOR is on every entry

I would imagine it stands for Date of Registration

ADDED It also appears on the birth indexes

A 'supplementary' entry to a record.

Hope this helps

And thank you Jim and Rosie.

It's been so long, I've forgotten why I was looking at a death in Fulham, not one of my usual areas at all!
