Was he in the Canadian army?
« on: Saturday 06 March 10 15:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
a relative of mine said his father remembers a relative who travelled from canada who he believes he was in the canadian army he thinks was called Thomas craig born c1874 berwick upon tweed (parents james and mary craig)
Is there any way of confirming he was in the canadian army (also getting a little info on his time in the army and what happened to him, as i dont have ancestry membership)

If anyone can help that'd be great
thanks
Becky

Hi,

Go to

www.collectionscanada.gc.ca

and click on the genealogy link. You can then search the military records for WW I.

Good hunting.

Collections Canada seems to be down at the moment.  It sometimes happens - they are most likely updating, changing etc.

Has Thomas Craig, Berwick on Tweed, Scotland ?
next of kin - Samuel Craig, brother, 2063 Manitoba St., Vancouver, British Columbia
DOB - 13 Dec 1876
miner, enlisted April 29, 1915, Calgary, Alberta
Reg# 1240, 29251, 446341

Possibly his brother:
Samuel Dickie Craig, Reg # 1015444
He enlisted in 1916.
He lists his place of birth as Berwick on Tweed, England, is married and has seven children. His address is Vancouver, BC.

You can check out the attestation papers at the above site and you can also order the full service files from the same site. There is a place at the top of the page on How to Consult or Order a File. It is a secure site and you can order the files on line using a credit card. You pay for the number of pages that are in the file (usually around 25 pages)

www.automatedgenealogy.com

1911 Census of Canada
1911/Alberta/Red Deer/52 Township 39/page 5
Household 129
Thomas Craig, single, b. Dec. 1875, age 35, Scotland, immigrated 1905 ?, farmer

1911/British Columbia/Vancouver/55 South Vancouver/page 10
Samuel D. Craig, b. Jan 1871, age 40, England, immigrated 1906
His wife was born in Scotland
Children born in England, Scotland, Manitoba and British Columbia

You can check out the original pages on this site by using the split screen option at the top of the page. It is sometimes slow so be patient. The original pages contain more information than the transcribed records but are sometimes difficult to read.

It appears that Thomas may have lived in both Red Deer and Calgary and that Samuel lived in Manitoba and British Columbia.

Is Berwick on Tweed close to the border between Scotland/England as they both use the same town name but different countries and also on immigration one uses Scotland as place of birth and the other England.
Good luck with your search.
